It is a very slippery slope…Gin did it for the English…..

William III of England, a Dutchman originally known as William of Orange (“Sounds very ‘Game of Thrones,’ doesn’t it?” Ford says, rightly) became King of England, Ireland, and Scotland in 1689.

“He began his reign by implementing trade-war and protectionist-style economic tactics against France that might make some modern politicians jealous,” Ford laughs. “He enforced blockades and introduced heavy taxes on French wine and Cognac in an attempt to weaken their economy.”

At the same time, William III instituted The Corn Laws in England. These decrees provided tax breaks on spirits production, resulting in what Ford calls “a distilling free-for-all.”

“This led to a period in England that is often dubbed the ‘Gin Craze,’ a period where a pint of gin was cheaper than a pint of beer,” Ford says.

I feel like I am missing out on all this wonderful Scotch and Gin. I too can't handle a drop of alcohol, too diabetic and never got past anything stronger than beer 😀

I found proof I have the right Lt. Col MacCabe. It was Lt. Col (Surgeon Major) Fredrick Faber MacCabe South Irish Horse. It took two weeks of reading the internet, but now there is no doubt I have the correct Lt. Col. MacCabe that awarded the watch at the Scottish Command Depot in 1918.

Mine is the watch Christopher Walken ‘wore’ in Pulp Fiction
After then before shots below - my watchmaker did an amazing job of getting that dial back to a pristine and pearly white…
I’ve seen the ‘ should I’ threads, should I wear my watch, playing golf, tennis &c but nothing on peristalsis, go figure!
P.s. it is a Land and Water model with a Zenith swan neck regulator
Mr Walken confirmed it did Swan Dive and land in water 😀

If you have a desire to hide things, just keep it to yourself and no one will know.

I posted about this one years ago on a different forum. It was worn by a WW II vet for 20 out of his 35 years in the Navy. A lookout at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41 at the age of 17--he watched the Arizona get blown out of the water and sustained injuries to both legs.. Afterwards went on to a very long and distinguished career in the Navy.

This is the man who wore the watch. I purchased it from his son.

He was a Navy pilot, did you learn about why he has a Hamilton UDT Canteen watch? I didn't see any history about combat or reconn diving. Amazing moment in history he witnessed. He was also at North Island and in charge of several pilots.

Yup, his son told me it was given to him by a buddy who was a diver.

This is a picture of his son. As you are aware by now, F F MacCabe was important part of Irish Horse Racing.

There is an interesting movie clip that has a person who is a Captain in the SIH. The movie was made at the Curragh (near Dublin)

He is directing the entire day of sporting events.

He lived near Dublin at the time. Not far from the Curragh.
He is famous for training the horse Orby that beat the English.

He may have moved to the Curragh where the movie was made.

I was curious about the 1914 Captain smoking. I thought this isn't right for a doctor to be smoking, but then until the 1970s not much was known about the health affects of smoking due to big business hiding the truth.

Here is what he knew in 1923. It is very likely he was smoking in 1914. He never quit completely.

Our family doctor smoked when I was young. He quit by the late 1960s.

Interesting views presented in that age.

I never smoked and don't suppose I'll take it up at this point.

Made some more progress in isolating T Campbell.
We know the exact month of the 3rd Battalion Sports Day in 1918.
Also, there is a strong chance T Campbell was a Black Watch.

Finally found Lt. Col. Fredrick Faber MacCabe in a 1906 photo when he was still a Surgeon Lt. at the Curragh Camp.
