Good to see a famous and powerful person held accountable for their despicable entitled behavior. Good for you, Australia.

The government has to show its authority over citizens and visitors even though he presents minimal danger to anyone by their own admission, and even if it doesn't line up with current health knowledge and guidelines. But governments aren't known to be rational. Australia has abused its citizens the last two years and people are fed up, who could blame them? This Covid fear porn will end when the citizens say they have had enough, they are at that point now, but governments hate to let go of their power and control. Australia looks foolish in this affair, it's a black eye, but their choice. Hopefully they can get their act together for the F1 in April, but nothing is assured with this gang who can't seem to shoot straight.

Good to see a famous and powerful person held accountable for their despicable entitled behavior. Good for you, Australia.

To wit: the mother of one of my patients, who was a high-ranking college tennis player, told me a story about her daughter, who was nationally ranked here in the US as a junior, and Andy Roddick.

Apparently, she was 7 years old at the time, and was waiting with a group of other young kids to get an autograph. He told them he would sign if they were quiet. She was at the front.

One of the kids behind her made a noise, and he said to the patient’s daughter, “Now I’m not signing your ball. You’re not getting an autograph. Shut the fυck up.”

Another class act…

You have no idea, what you are talking about. Stay out of our affairs. We don't comment on yours.

Have you gone full Karen 😗

I haven't had to wear a mask or have anything disruptive for the last 2 years due to good border control.

Seriously man we’ve been totally sweet here for two years in QLD, I think we had a few weeks of wearing masks but that’s about it, and during that time we had 7 deaths in a state of 5.2 million, while by contrast Alabama had 16,641 with a smaller population of only 4.9 million.

I can’t convey enough how much you get lied to about our country for propaganda reasons on a consistent basis. I genuinely see Americans talking about how Australia banned all guns and nonsense surrounding that while my sister and her bloke have a bloody arsenal that would be excessive even by Texan standards, legally.

I’ve visited many places in the world, and frankly it’s pretty great here, about the only other place I’d genuinely love to live is probably Singapore, which also has a lot of strict rules but as a watch collector and food lover, is basically heaven.

The place I live is terrible, no need to come here, even to visit. 😀

I know your sort ... wear garden PPE (50,000 UK A&E admissions per year) and you are a tw-t

Take the risk of going out without a vaccine and you are a tw-t
Are you taking a uniform approach to risk and safety :0)

Just back from a crowded UK pub (I have a habit of doing that) - looking at your garden photos even if god forbid the virus went rampant and they drop an FAB, I am not sure we will notice much difference. Social distancing does not look a major challenge compared to the UK.

For the tennis I do think it is good to end the current circus and hope people can focus on the Tennis / the future now. Ultimately Djokovic is a potential sporting goat and it was clear he did not want the vaccine months ago. It was also probable he would try every trick in the book to play. Every sport has governing bodies, every country has immigration - some senior people need their asses kicked for this allowing this circus which has kept the media happy and kept other important headlines off the front pages. It is not like we have a great track record of it ending well for top athletes and music stars even before modern media - so all was predictable and avoidable.

I notice the English cricket team made it in ok...... but they were due to loose badly ;0)

I commend the Australian government for sticking to its guns and enforcement of strict guidelines. I sure wish we had 1/100 of that commitment in the US. The Joker will survive, he will get his chance to break the record later this yr, but the pandemic is much bigger than a trophy chase by an athlete who thinks he’s above the law.

I’m glad this mess is over. My last contribution to this thread will be a couple of responses from Canadian tennis player Posposil and American John Isner.

I very much like Vasek as a player, and respect what he does on the court and for the PTPA. However he has some facts incorrect in his tweets.

By the way, if Novak was happy to stay home if he didn't meet the qualifications, he should have left as soon as he was denied entry.

That is a fair very point - very hard to know what goes on at the top table and what advice people are given or the pressures they are under in the global game. Einstein showed that our space time is curved... Quantum shows it might be totally bent....

He met the qualifications, that’s why he was allowed into the country. But I agree, he should have gone home a day into this circus because he should have known that there was only one possible outcome.

Don't expect any players to come out against the #1 player in the world. They will either kiss his ass or remain silent.

What is the obesity rate in Australia?

Alabama seems to be any where from top 3-7 in the USA (out of 50 states) depending on source. 39% or so of population.

1 - According to the federal government, he didn't meet the qualifications.
2 - He "won" the first case not on the merits of the exemption argument, but on the lack of fairness in the timing of the actions the border force took.
3 - He lied on his entry card.

There's plenty of blame to go around here, and certainly Tennis Australia, and the government there could have handled this a whole lot better (Craig Tilley should resign IMO). But Novak bears a large chunk of the responsibility for how this went. He was not the only player deported...

Although I can't say anyone I've seen has come out "against" him, several have noted that he knew the rules well in advance and simply could have been vaccinated, and avoided all this.

This reminds me of the situation with Naomi Osaka last year, when she decided not to attend the press conferences for the sake of her mental health. Novak was quick to point out that rules are rules, and attending these is part of the job. Seems somewhat hypocritical considering recent events...

32.4%, better than Alabama but worse than average for Australia. It wasn’t our obesity rate that gave us the low death rate though, we had zero covid for most of the last two years.

Top athletes are held to the highest standard and are the ones most often criticized.
