My brother-in-law got a new toy to pass some furlough time away (Glowforge). He got the exhaust set up this weekend and already let me burn some wood 😁

Pretty sure the guy has never worn a watch in his life... but he still gets it, the Speedmaster is freakin’ awesome!

Anyway, had to boast a bit about him committing a good portion of his day working on some fine tuning with the design, power, wood type, etc. After he cuts some backing I’m going to have some new office signs!

Anyone else got some solid inlaws? Maybe some that like watches even?

I have a great father-in-law, had a great mother-in-law, but I have known very few people as full of crap as my brother-in-law. My other brother-in-law that’s married to my sister is a good guy, but he’s boring. Consider yourself lucky.

Mine is nice but an insufferable pedant. The final word on every topic, everyone else is an idiot.

Ha! Amen to that 👍

My claim to fame is living close by and having a truck he gets to borrow. It’s definitely worth the trade 😁

I have a pretty cool brother in law. He lives a few states away, but came and visited this past weekend. He's a car guy, and although he drives around an old beat-up puck-up truck he used to fix up '60s muscle cars on the side -- which my sister but an end to when they got married. He was then into boating for a decade or so (started with ski boat, then moved to a cabin cruiser so they could go on overnight trips). They moved out of the area about 20 years ago as he moved up the ladder in his company, but finally settled about a 3 hour drive away from us. He got into woodworking, and now makes small furniture, jewelry boxes, cutting boards, etc. in his spare time (which is a lot right now, as Covid stopped his weekly work traveling, and being in the middle of a divorce from my sister also freed him up from a lot of obligations she would dump on him). He picked up a mutt of a '60s Corvette about 5 years ago and is planning a frame replacement, but that is on hold until after the divorce.

I asked him about watches this past weekend, as I had understood his father had given him and his brothers Pateks some 25+ years ago. Turns out he has no idea/ recollection, as he has not worn a watch in several years and he remembers usually only having Timexes.

His family was pretty well off when he was goring up, but it was all due to his father. His father grew up on a farm, but put himself through college and law school, and became a corporate attorney for a good-sized US company. My BIL has always been very frugal with money, and prefers DIY to hiring contractors, etc. He does not collect anything except for woodworking tools. He doesn't have flashing cars, clothes, jewelry, etc. He is very well grounded.

I have two BILs. Some days they are cool. Many days they are not. I wanted a closer relationship with them both and I did my part to foster it, but the streets did not run in 2 ways. So I have resigned myself to saying oh well.

This sounds like a good phrase for a headstone.

Bummer about the divorce, sounds like a nice chap. I wish I had some talents, or any talent really. Woodworking, mechanical, electrical, landscape, watches, instrumental, forging, computer, you name it. I’m a jack of all and king of none

I'm sorry, how are we related exactly?

My mother-in-law is cool and gets my watch fanaticism. She gave me her father's old Seiko three hander to keep and maintain. It's not expensive but it's special to her. She also paid for a service on a watch from my grandfather's collection and wears it as part of her own rotation.

She has a decent collection and I hope my kids get at least a few pieces from it eventually.

He got it attached to another board to give it some strength and keep it from bending, applied a bit of stain, and put a magnet style hanger on the back.

Now she’s hung in my makeshift basement office 😀

I married an only child. It feels like a win when dealing with my sister.
