My brother said that he had an old Scout knife that was " a bit rough ", and would I be able to spruce it up for him.

He sent it!

" a bit rough " Master of the understatement, my brother. 馃檮

Had to make a new pommel, other than that, and fibre spacers at guard and pommel, all original.

"Before" pic is the top one, by the way.馃榿

Steve.

What's your address. 馃槈
PM me if you want some work, will pay 馃槜

I knew there had to be a thread... thank you for linking @STANDY.

This is my state of the collection minus a few changes... sold the native 5 and bought the benchmade buggout below. And the purple beauty is just on loan from a friend.

It鈥檚 wonderful! The bottle opener doubles at a flat head screwdriver. It鈥檚 from Great Eastern Cutlery however everything from GEC seems to be hard to get. Luckily this one was a gift from a good friend

No, I'm not a collector in the sense of having a plan either but would describe myself as a random gatherer.

I have an edc pictured here and seem to gather knives which might be useful for deerstalking/hunting. Pictured are the two which come into the field with me, a short khukri with a 5" blade - I just felt that the traditional khukri set with skinning knife would be really useful as I can go inside the cavity and conceal all bug the tip in my hand.
Also pictured is a Raymond Young stainless blade stalking knife which holds an edge really well and is a peach to keep clean. Stalking knives need to afford the facility for me to butcher down a whole carcass with the one blade.
Around the house are a number of others, full-sized khukri, lockers, multiple and French Lagouiole knives which are so elegant but don't look like the right tool for butchery.
Nice thread, some interesting shows, nice to see the FS types showing up.

Had one of those when I was a youngster in the early 60's, probably WW2 or Korean war vintage. They were selling these in NOS condition for the princely sum of 5 cents American.
Wish I'd bought dozens. I think mine was marked either KABAR or Camilus. I have a civilian Camilus Dad carried for decades, probably pre WW2 by the looks of it.

Back in the eighties I found a cheap looking pocket knife with orange grip panels for $1.50. They had a dozen or so umarked in a cardboard box, most with signs of hard use, mine was NOS condition. Quickly realized it was a switchblade. Lost track of it. Years later I found these were issued to Parachutists to cut their cords if caught in a tree and are now a valuable military collectable.

In the UK we would be put in jail if we collected or owned big knives

Neither of those were big knives. though the switchblade would probably be illegal most places.
A friend had a Shrade Walden sea scout switchblade. Made like a boy scout knife but with switchblade and marlin spike.
My Nephew was once assigned to do paperwork on remains of US Seamen at a WW2 POW camp in Germany.
One of the diggers found a German cadet's pocket knife with cast bronze handle with the image of a WW1 era battle wagon, the digger wasn't allowed to keep it because of their militaria laws so he gave it to my nephew as a souvenir. It was in very good condition. He didn't think it was worth much but then found one went at auction for $7,000 .

Can someone recommend a nice, lightweight and slim knife that wouldn't be a burden to carry around clipped in a back pocket?
I always have my key chain Swiss Army knife but I was thinking of upgrading...

That's a rabbit hole, like asking for a nice watch.

What's your price rang as like watches $5K would be easy to spend.

Start with Spyderco ( that's a week of searching just this brand 馃槈 )

OK well for example,

@mgmarsh39 posted that CRKT a few posts above.
And a few posts above that @Jwit posted that Benchmade.

I don't necessarily have a budget, but what makes one $50 and the other $200?
Can I apply the same watch logic? Better materials, design and quality?

I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I do enjoy a nice blade. I like both Benchmade and Spyderco at their price points, and I like Kershaw if you're looking to spend less coin. I have good experience with all of those brands' products. Right now I am carrying a Zero Tolerance 350 (basically an upscale Kershaw)
