A good solid brand that has been around the block, but doesn’t seem to have the name recognition that say Rolex or Omega have with the general public. I always wonder how many people know what IWC even stands for... curious.
Your thoughts on the IWC brand?

    a) IWC has tremendous worldwide name recognition

    b) though my knowledge is largely confined to vintage, that perpetual calendar does not look genuine

It’s the genuine article. This particular model in yellow gold has been retired. I bought a number of years ago from a local AD. Check reference

    Portuguese Perpetual Calendar
I believe it’s still made with a rose gold case with a black dial

Thank you and I will read them all. I’m not as knowledgeable about IWC vintage as I never collected vintage IWC. It is good to see that the OF community enjoys and admires the brand.
    Thanks again.

Huge fan of the brand! I got my first IWC on a whim in my 20's before I knew much about the brand, a titanium Aquatimer. Then picked up a few vintage pieces from the 50's & 60's. Sold or traded those all off. About 15-years ago I got the watch below, 3706 Der Fliegerchronograph. It's presently my longest-owned watch and was my daily beater until very recently when I retired it in favor of a Seiko Turtle for that purpose. I still wear it about half the time.

That PC is a very fine piece! Congrats on what I consider a great find.

    Here's mine:

IWC is very well known. I have a IWC Ingenieur on my hunting list

Another big fan of IWC. Over the years have owned a Portuguese chrono Ref 3714-04 (since sold off) and currently have a Mark XVI.

My future wish list includes a vintage blue dial Yacht Club, an Ingeneiur 3239, and a Yacht Club II (a very divisive design, but I think it looks great...)

They have a great history and especially the mark XI stands out for me. As a private pilot my self, I love their connection to the air industry.
Nowadays they make plenty of big watches with date and all kinds of complications. I'm more into the simple design, so I recently added this to my collection.

A beauty... reminds me of the pilot watches of the 1940s

The Portuguese chrono Ref 3714-04 was my first high-end modern watch. When I lived in Italy years ago, I recollect seeing that exact reference in a jeweler's window day after day as I walked to work. Eventually, I picked one up a few years later on a trip to Switzerland. Wore it almost every day for several years, but rarely strapped it on once I picked up a vintage Speedy Pro. The Portuguese chrono was just a bit too formal for casualwear -- and too big to be a true dress watch. So I moved it on...

Casual clothes don't do it for me when thinking about wearing my Portofino chrono. It looks great with a navy blue blazer though. I wouldn't wear it with black tie (as if; the 80s and 90s are long over ;)) but I will wear it to my wedding in four weeks. The watch called out to me when I first saw it, and then my soon-to-be wife surprised me with it on my birthday. Its SS with a IWC croc strap and a beautiful creamy white face. I don't have the opportunity wear it often but it remains my favorite watch:

Completely understand. I too seldom wear my dress watches which is probably why most of my watches are sport models
