Any K-drama / K-pop fans?

Almost three years ago now, after a trip to Asia, some very clever Netflix algorithm caught up with me and caused me to fall into that remarkable rabbit hole that is so called K-drama (where K stands for Korean).

Fastforward a couple years later and while I have never set foot in Korea, I’m now also becoming my company’s resident K-pop expert, and the only persons I can discuss this with seriously are colleague’s 10 year old or 12 year old kids. Funny enough, this newfound interest has helped me gain an image of «cool » in the workplace, even though it appears I’m far from dying my hair pink or blue or orange.

Anyone else a hidden fan? Anyong!

K soaps 😀
Used to have one of the Korean TV channels here in NZ taken off the satellite and put out for nation wide viewing, used to love the various series that they had on like My Wife's a Superwoman etc, ignored the K pop stuff, sadly they took it off after a couple of years.

I worked as a personal assistent to a young man in a weelchair. He recomended Blakpink and some Japanese band called Babymetal. It was fun seeing the consert videos from Japan, dont remember blackpink I m sorry. And my musical tastes are stuck in the 60`s-80`s.

I’m a huge fan of K-food, specially Samyang Carbo noodles, we’re not sponsored by then or anything, I’m just a big fan.

On the Kdrama front, Revenant is absolutely fantastic as a thriller with some supernatural elements.

The kids love a lot of others like Crash Landing On You but every time I look at the screen when they’re watching it its some dude crying, in every seen which was a bit much for me.

I’ve watched many K-dramas on Netflix. Recent ones were Alchemy of Souls and Strong Girl Nam Soon. Right now, indeed, this very morning I was watching Love Next Door before getting my turkey ready.

I'm guilty of Netflix binging, too ... some really interesting Korean shows there, though my favourites were both pretty hardcore political dramas.

"The Devil Judge" and "The Whirlwind" were amazing shows, very pointed, well thought-out, with excellent actors. I found them even better than the original British "House of Cards" (which was a million times more focused than the U.S. version), which had been my benchmark for political drama so far (yea, I know it's old ... as in "hoary ancient" ... but it hasn't actually lost relevance at all, more's the pity).

"Designated Survivor: 60 days" is a great watch, too, especially in comparison to the U.S. show "Designated Survivor".

Go for pink hair Syrte.

Ha, Bryan, dang you’ve just found my favorite “girl group” 😜 Yes the call of the pink hair is almost as compelling as the pink watch!

Ha, I’m just like the kids, believe it or not many grown ups like Crash landing on you, it’s almost become a classic. Unfortunately I’m a wuss when it comes to violence, horror or just scary.

However I did accidentally watch a great thriller series called “Three little women”.
“It’s okay not to be okay” has some scary supernatural elements but I found it sort of a masterpiece frankly, the actors are amazing in their depiction of people disturbed by trauma, woven in with a lot of very endearing moments.
Another great one is the Amazing attorney Woo. Doona! a great depiction of relationships, Reply 1988 also a masterpiece showing the spirit of community in an old Seoul street just before the generals fell.

How did you like Alchemy of Souls @hartfie? I’ve been wondering if I shd watch it.

I enjoyed it quite a bit although I’m sure I missed 90% of the mythological references.

K-film is that a thing? I have just seen two of the films ( Old boy and Parasite) on the list below, but I enjoyed them very much.

Thank @ahartfie!
@hen yes K-film as K-food and K everything have become a thing it appears. I also liked Parasite, will check out Old Boy!

Agree, that was insane!
And here’s another unbelievable K-pop performance from a week ago. The artist G-Dragon is another legend, younger than Psy but same period, composes his own music. The group members left their production company a year or so ago but he just released song 2 and 3 - the best moments start with song 3 IMHO. It feels like they’re paving the way for an come back.

Syrte, I just ordered some Korean foodstuffs and I’m going to try my hand at making a few things I’ve seen on Maangchi’s channel. I wish we had a decent Asian market here that was on Instacart.

Thanks! My dububuchim-yangnyeomjang was a success. When I make more tomorrow I’ll fry the tofu slightly less. I was expecting the sauce to be hotter but it was just right.

Looks tempting, you might have to post the recipe😀

talking about drama, all of this seemed quite trite compared to this week’s failed coup. That did seems like a bad k drama 😟
