I think refurbishing the dial would make it nicer. International Dial charges about $60 for the service.
Here's Handy Dan's blog on servicing a similar watch. The dial has a nice sunbust texture. Dan may even service your grandfather's watch.
Dan will work with International Dial also. He will send the dial off for refinishing while he services the movement.

Just my opinion but I'd leave the dial alone other than cleaning. Get it serviced and wear it on a strap consistent with the period for awhile. You may find you like the size better than you'd think you would.
My present favorite for everyday wear is a 33.5mm Paul Peugeot. Never gets hung up on cuffs and so light I often forget I have it on.
Yeah I think I’d probably heir on the side of less is more.

That looks great! Very similar, if not exact, case, hands, and indices, different crown though. Is that strap original? My grandpop used one of those speidel bands, it did a number on the lugs, can’t throw it away, but I’ll definitely never use it again.

That dial is fine, do not have it refinished. Although the camera shows up light spotting you will not be able to see it on the wrist. That's a nice watch to have, especially with the family connection 👍
Thanks! Yes, I am very happy to have it. I hope @Professor About the size not being a huge deal, I would like to wear it from time to time after it is serviced.

Your dial has already been refinished in the past, the font for both "Hamilton" and "Automatic" are incorrect, as is the dial finish, hence the recommendations of several here who have suggested a refinish to get it back to the correct appearance.

Still, as it is now, it does have a certain appealing vintage look.

Ten or even five years ago, these 1960s watches didn't have a lot of collector appeal, but are growing in popularity nowadays. Yours is a nice example.

If the watch in question originally had a satiny sunburst effect dial I'd agree with you, but the plain finish of his dial lends it more to a honest patina than to refinishing. Refinished in the original plain form would not be a great improvement, but its a matter of personal taste.

Being a family heirloom still in presentable condition the aging gives it character and calls to mind the original owner who wore it for many years with pride.

Ah ok, I didn’t realize that was what they were getting at, I thought it was just because of the specs on the dial.

No, I initially suggested it not because of the specs but because of the poorly done fonts the last time it was refinished. My apologies for not being clear when I suggested it before. International Dial has the correct dies to print the fonts as they would have been done by Hamilton originally.

Rarely see people discuss Hamilton watches here. Thinking about getting a field watch. Their new field mechanical just came out and I personally think it looks great. Should I go for the new one or stick with their old officer mechanica

I’ve always been a fan, I think they have classic line looks , good quality

I love my Hamilton khaki field watch automatic. Think it's the best new watch you can buy for <$500.

Love the vintage Hamiltons. Like the modern ones, but they are too damn big. I prefer under 40mm, which eliminates almost all of them.

If I didn't have one of these already, I'd be all over this one:

Hamilton 14k Gold "Piping Rock" Timepiece

There's a small chip in the enamel at 3, and the watch probably needs a cleaning.

Still a decent watch at a decent price.

P.S. - Someone snagged it. Hope it was one of you!

Darn, I missed it, and it was a very good price. A Piping Rock is on my short list.
