I feel like I have a whole bunch of moms looking over me - but in a good way. Thanks for all the advice and recs people! Will report back!

If you read through the forums you will note that in the last week there have been two recent reports here about stolen watches. One was on the streets of London. People where aghast at the report because it is supposed to be a very safe city. The other was from a locker at a gym in somewhere USA. No one wants to see this kind of thing happen. Sometimes it is avoidable through good practices. As an example, while on a cruise a former colleague took an on-shore excursion in Jamaica that included several stops for strolling through small shopping areas. There, one of the locals decided that he liked the Rolex Sub my colleague was wearing. So long Submariner! What was my colleague thinking? The place for that Sub was in the safe of his cabin that day! Another friend of mine was sitting in a small coffee shop in Mexico City. He was minding his own business and reading a book. He heard a man say, "I like your watch." When he looked up to say thanks, he noticed a knife in the hand of the guy offering the observation. I don't have to tell you what happened next. Finally (and this is a common occurrence in South Florida), gentlemen wearing Rolex watches have often become the targets of beautiful women they meet at night clubs. The woman pretends to be interested, the two go home, or to the guy's hotel. Suddenly, the guy feels woozy, passes out and wakes up the next morning without his Rolex.

One of the most exciting things about travel is getting to really know the place you are visiting. Sometimes that includes unplanned detours, and getting lost is part of the exercise. As I said before, I don't want to paint Miami as Dodge City. It is a very beautiful and safe place 99% of the time. However, don't be fooled into thinking you will be safe everywhere. Enjoy!

Perhaps you need an escort to feel more comfortable

Lived there for 20 years never got robbed nor did I ever know anyone who got robbed must try harder

Have a friend who smokes. Been smoking 60 years. Says he won't stop because he hasn't gotten cancer yet, nor does he know anyone personally who has.

I go to Miami all the time and IMO as long as you are aware of your surroundings it is no better or worse than any big city. I wear my nice watches and stay aware of my surroundings, you should be fine.

I second the recommendation for the design district, so many nice watch shops in one area. I often just spend a few hours there to waste time and the restaurant across from the Seiko boutique is pretty good.

Yet, many statistics show that it consistently rates amongst the USA's most dangerous cities, often in the top 20. So maybe a little extra vigilance is due.
