You get invited to a party and given a gift... you then sell the gift, because, well, go fυck the people who gave it to you, it's yours now, and you can do what you like.

Do I really need to explain why this isn't cool?

It's not really a gift, it's a marketing inducement. They wanted something for that "gift". It's not like it came from your Grandma at Christmas.

I'm not ethically opposed to making a profit, I'm ethically opposed to profiteering.

A 600% profit on a free item is profiteering.

The argument can't even be made that he was asking market rate, as there is no market.

He's just some greedy douche canoe, hoping that someone with more money than sense will buy the thing he got given for free.

If I were running PR/Marketing he'd be blacklisted...

Hi @tyrantlizardrex
Really? Spending energy ..... on this ? Let the market decided pricing on this item, nothing is free. You don't know why someone sells something or maybe they migh be in a bad way... You just don't know ... I find no knowledge is gained by a thread like this....

Your comment " He's just some greedy douche canoe, hoping that someone with more money than sense will buy the thing he got given for free."

Comment like this leads us to where ?

Come on..... is he selling something he does not have? Like stealing someone else's watch photos and saying it his watch? No.... just a guy or gal trying to sell something they don't need....

Regards
Bill Sohne

Hi @tyrantlizardrex

You are now the one acting in poor form. Your not being too cool.

Please think before you post.

Selling a free ST magazine is a dick move... this is next level
He's just some greedy douche canoe, hoping that someone with more money than sense will buy the thing he got given for free.

I would think that someone in the business of wordsmithing would be a bit more articulate than to resort to vulgarities like this.

It's OK to not like something. In fact, I happen to agree with you.

However, it is their right to sell something if they don't want it. The amount they paid (or didn't pay) is irrelevant.

There are a lot of things in this world that I don't like or disagree with. Doesn't mean I need to curse everyone out with whom I disagree.

Let's try to be a little more civil with our discourse, please?

Thank you.

Selling off press kits is extremely common, happens in all industries. I don't see anything odd about it, except, as @Togri v. 2.0 mentions, the pitiful size of the USB key 😁

I find different people's views on ethics and morality... interesting.

And apologise to those who feel offended.

My view, and my statements remain.

As to the wordsmithing, @gatorcpa - not a business... I don't have one of those.

And the thread not adding value @Bill Sohne, apologies - I'll try to add more "here's a Speedmaster am I going to get rich?, "what is this rubbish I bought without research and now want to sell?", or "which strap should I buy?" content in the future. 😉

Just for the record @tyrantlizardrex, I was not offended in any way. I welcome robust discussion and am always interested in views that differ to mine. I am resilient and do not require a safe space of any kind - not virtual or in real life. Please feel free to continue the debate if you so desire.

Thank you, I didn't think you did... I thought we were having a debate... but 2 mods above clearly feel otherwise, and given that between them, 3 other mods have liked their posts, I think that's the grown ups putting me in a corner and telling me to play nice, and wash my mouth out.

If your idea of "having a debate" is the way you've expressed yourself here, maybe you're better off not starting these types of threads or doing it elsewhere.

Sorry Trev, I thought @arcadelt and I were having a debate... apologies for the language causing offence, none of it was aimed at anyone here.

Why conversations like this are better had over a pint.

Seriously, it's all OK. I was trying to lighten the mood in here. Sorry if it fell flat.

What Bill's talking about is something like this: https://omegaforums.net/threads/not-a-speedmaster-thread.62142/ where Adam posted some pics about one of the lesser known and appreciated panda dial Seamasters, or this thread that Noodia wrote (his passing was a great loss to the UG community and collectors in general) https://omegaforums.net/threads/universal-geneve-uni-compax.4446/ or the ongoing replies in Johnsteed's epic Constellation thread https://omegaforums.net/threads/vintage-constellations-show-and-tell.19186/page-38 or the thread here tracking SpaceX's activities https://omegaforums.net/threads/space-cadet-clubhouse.55600/page-3

We absolutely do have some threads that are more boring like people asking about straps but its the ones people put effort into that are interesting and fun like those above that make me look forward to unwinding and relaxing here rather than working on the other sites I have to manage.

A 600% profit on a free item is not profiteering, it's actually zero.

There you go, that's the irrefutability of mathematics for you - except if it had sold at that price the seller would still have £600.

And infinite profit on the item itself, it is therefore even worse than discussed above!

I am a Procurement Professional specializing in Marketing (advertising, media, Trade and Consumer promotion, market research) for 30 years.....

Press kits and giveaways (trash and trinkets) are meant to build reach and awareness. Most of the time in my view they are nothing but trouble to source and produce, if not based in strategy, a waste of marketing funds. If well done, they have a purpose in the marketing mix. If this kit is compelling enough for someone to want to sell and someone else to buy, no one at Advertiser PR or Marketing cares about it being sold. Putting it out for sale is merely more exposure (reach) so it's a win. Is it slightly creepy, yea, but it's a win for the advertiser. There are collectors who love this stuff, sports and racing, entertainment etc.

Perfectly legitimate providing the employer doesn't have a policy about personally profiting from benefits gained while on the job. If not, better it goes to someone who wants it than cluttering up your house, or worse, going into land fill.

I tend to agree - to give another similar (sort of) example - when someone travels for their work, they may take flights paid for by their company, or stay in specific hotel chains where they would earn loyalty rewards - points for free flights and free stays. Many people use these points earned while on the job for personal vacations, and I see nothing wrong with that if there isn't a company policy prohibiting it.

I understand that this particular sale is egregious due to the sheer numbers involved, but it's common for things like store displays, and even parts boxes from spare parts to get bought and sold amongst collectors (seems to be very prevalent in the Rolex world). As noted this wasn't really a gift in the traditional sense. It's not like someone selling on a bottle of wine a guest brought you when they came to dinner.

Is this sale distasteful? Yes it is in my view. But is it unethical? I don't think so, and I doubt there would be this level of outrage is someone was asking $30 for it instead of hundreds...

Cheers, Al
