That was my statement in the ad....regarding that, I think it depends on the destiny of N.Korea itself if the status quo can continue in the future or not. I would speculate that the value of these watches will decrease if N.Korea enters an armed conflict....
Discussions of collectibles such as the watches in subject matter here are probably among the main purposes of this forum though, we can never deny their association to a blood-stained history of North Korea... By the way, many human-right-advocate Omega lovers must be surely outraged seeing the solid gold version made during the same era:
Despite the communism, the Supreme Leader does enjoy the pricier things in life, like the Omega. I'm surprised that these watches even got out of the North, how many people died to get even one of these watches out of the country? I would bet a family or two.
Ugh. Who wants to be reminded of a murderous tyrant every time you look at the time? Gimme Ed White’s Ed White instead. I know, it’ll cost multiples more, but it’ll always be worth it.
I wondered if there might be laws against selling merchandise connected with a fascist or embargoed state. Maybe not. The major auction sites and auction houses prohibit the sale of Nazi paraphernalia. There are some interesting ethical issues, on both sides.
Haha that was well before my time but the initial post in that thread you linked had me laughing so hard - with the benefit of hindsight is everyone sure that guy wasn't some sort of surrealist comedian?
As far as I'm concerned, these are interesting watches - historically - but I'd never buy one. Just like I'd never buy a German watch from the Second World War. Period. My 2 Cents.
So the question I have is how many zeros would be added to that now? One or two? I assume that it was auctioned at some point in the '90s looking at that brochure?
To my best knowledge, these timepieces were commissioned to be presented to foreign diplomatic figures (certainly from nations of the same communist block). That perhaps was how they got out of NK.
It is very fresh, I'm afraid! This is the site where I got the information: https://www.vintage-portfolio.com/s...solid-gold-north-korea-kim-il-sung-signature/
And there are also people who think idolizing Che Guevara is cool.... Stuff like this, Nazi memorabilia, it all gives me the creeps!
