An interesting repair - the "dog bite" Speedmaster

I totally respect wanting to keep the original dial, I think in this case I'd have looked to replace it and instead put the damaged dial in a little display on my desk or something. I'd love to see all the PDF's that Archer has sent out over the years with his repairs, I still look through the two I got back from him and am amazed each time.

Fascinating story and impressive repair. I was surprised of the extent of the damage to the watch and bracelet caused by a German Shepherd's bite. Interesting fact... human bite strength isn't too far behind that of a German Shepherd. Wonder if the dog broke any teeth?
"German Shepherds are stronger than humans in terms of bite strength. A German Shepherd’s bite force exerts 238 psi (pound per square inch) compared to between 150-200 psi of a human bite." (https://worldofdogz.com/are-german-shepherds-stronger-than-humans/).

Thanks for the entertainment Al. Your posts were simply outstanding. Bravo to the owner (and his family) for keeping the scar tissue.

Great plan and great result.
Tyme to get another dog or that will teach them to give me my treats more often.
Better do a good job or you will meet his dog!
Looks good, and he can have a great conversation piece.
He is lucky the dog didn't swallow it.
Had a co-worker whos dog ate the entire watch, leather band. Had funwaitng for it to pass on through.
Keep them ticking, till we run out of quarters.....

Sure - I received this photo of the watch from the customer:

He was putting luggage in the trunk of his car in an airport parking garage, and sometime later he looked down and the watch was gone. It was on a NATO strap, and the strap was still on his wrist, so that is likely why he didn't notice it at first. You know they say you can't lose a watch using a NATO because if one spring bar lets loose, the other will keep the watch attached - not always the case!

He went back and after a fairly long search found the watch, which had been driven over and was off in a corner. Obvious crystal damage, and some dial damage as well:

You can see how the chronograph seconds recording hand had been pushed down on the post, and the post has bent due to the pressure of being run over - the crystal had deflected down to press on the hands:

Needed a few parts certainly, but overall came out okay:

Again kept the dial as a reminder of the incident, and just how much these watches can take and still come out okay with a little work:

Cheers, Al

Squirrels don't like Speedmasters, maybe the same is true of German Shepherds.
Hum, possible the 21,600 bph is not to their likeing.

Hi Al!

Looking at your avatar pic I always imagined you as younger person

Your beard colour just made me adjust my inner picture of you 😉

Thank you for the dog-bite story!

Could you not order a new dial from Omega?

Yes, of course, but what fun is that?

This is a tritium dial, so a new dial would be luminova and finding a surplus tritium dial would have been quite expensive.

As I said I do like jobs like this - lost causes and basket cases that I can bring back to life. It's a nice change from the same routine of regular servicing, to take something from this:

Wonderful and fascinating post, thank you @Archer.

I’m just left with one question. Given your experience, is it better to have your Speedy run over by a vehicle or bitten by a dog?

Oh I see it was not a current moon watch.

Personally, I'd opt for the car as long as it wasn't still on my wrist. 😉
