The watch is a 22AS. I can't quite tell whether I am missing a metal ring (I don't remember what it is called) around the crystal.

Does anyone have an idea of whether that is the case here - I can't quite tell.

Metal ring around crystal = Bezel

In your case, a Google Image search would seem to say yes, it is missing something...

It clearly has a bezel. Maybe OP meant a tension ring on the inside?

Now that said... that doesn't look like the correct bezel, does it?

Yes, the bezel.

What you see in the picture is the case itself, not a smaller bezel that has been attached.

In fact, nothing is attached on the face side.

Where the lugs meet the case, they actually protrude above the outermost "ring" of the case, as you can see in the picture.

these suggest to me that it is missing the bezel.

Any thoughts?

Really hard to tell from the top what is protruding and what is not. But if you think it's missing, it probably is. Then you need a replacement case, source a bezel, or have one made for you.
