·The charity I would like to spotlight is the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. MS is an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The cause of MS is still unknown. Scientists believe that a combination of environmental and genetic factors contribute to the risk of developing MS.
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the brain and spinal cord is used to identify lesions (scar tissue) caused by MS. Typically the more lesions, the more significant the damage is to the MS patient. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease.
For some people, MS is a lifetime of moderate neurologic symptoms while for others it is a progressive disease that can be profoundly disabling and even fatal to the patient. For example, Annette Funicello was a movie star celebrity that was diagnosed with MS at 45 years old, became disabled in a wheelchair, and eventually died from the disease in 2013.
Donations to the National MS Society are used for Research, Programs, and Education. 87% of donations goes to these activities and 13% is used for Fund Raising and Administration.

The reason I am an advocate for this charity is both of my adult sons have been diagnosed with MS and are receiving treatments to slow down the progression of the disease.
