The watch: A Bucherer Chronometer

This is not a perfect watch, and has some caseback damage, but I figure the price is right for some interest.

The idea:

I picked this watch up cheap. It's not my style, I don't see myself wearing it, and I started thinking about doing a giveaway. I touched base with Janice&Fred about it brainstorming and they plan to donate some watches for future giveaways also. Including charity, without having to handle money and the responsibility/suspicions that bring with it, is a goal for us. That said, this is a trial run giveaway and more may follow pending how this goes.

What you need to do to enter, and how you can win:

Make any positive post in this thread, photos a plus, and be willing to at least spotlight a charity if you win. Make a donation if you are so inclined.

Spotlighting a charity could be something along the lines of a post like this by the winner: "The charity I would like to spotlight is the Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma, with the efforts of this foundation and over 200 Oklahoma Masonic Lodges millions of dollars in charitable assistance is invested in Oklahoma Communities. More info can be found here: www.mcfok.org"

The winner will be chosen by a random number generator. If there are 231 posts in the thread by the deadline, the random number generator will be instructed to generate a number between 1 and 231. The generated number will be the post number of the winner. I will then PM the winner for their shipping address.

The title of the thread will then be edited to include the charity's name, and the watch won will be shipped to the winner.

The last post accepted as an entrant will be 12:00 noon, central US Time on Sunday, October 25th.

No pats on the back or thanks needed, just looking for a positive way to pass this watch along. Thanks for any interest and I'll look forward to seeing some good posts and learning a little about a charity that interests the winner!

**Thanks to Janice&Fred for help thinking through this, and kind offer of watch donations for future giveaways!

I went for a long walk at lunch, and it made me feel pretty good to be in nature, even briefly. It also feels good to see this goodwill gesture by @Guy0783 👍

From my walk...

I am creating a submission on behalf of @DaveK. He didn't ask me to nor does he know I am doing this but if my number is drawn, the watch is his.

His online presence and caring heart to other members is about as positive as you can witness. Happy to have had the privilege to get to know Dave! For my picture... well, just look at his tagline

I’ll spotlight a little charity called helping hands food bank in Torrington CT USA. A little non descriptive food bank in a run down city that somehow never turns anyone away. Just serves the locals and a few surrounding towns but they do a lot with very little.

What a lovely idea. And in the spirit of cheeriness I present a piece entitled; Dog a la Nap

And in support of family I'd like to recognize the Alzheimer's Association - alz.org - for it's help to those suffering from the disease and its work towards a cure.

Great idea, OP!

I consider myself to be following a somewhat healthy lifestyle, I never smoked, I am very strict with my diet, I exercise 3-4 times a week and I don't drink any alcohol.
So you can probably understand why I was surprised to feel a lump in my left breast when I was soaping my body in the shower.
I finished the shower, went to the bedroom to wake up my wife so she can tell me I'm imagining things. She had a hard time feeling what I felt (something about the size of a small pea) but was not able to rule it out completely.
So I went online and scheduled a doctors appointment for the next morning and tried to go to sleep, emphasis on the tried.

The doctor I saw the next day confirmed my findings and sent me to do an ultrasound, the ultrasound also confirmed there was something there so the next day I did a mammogram that luckily came back with no findings. At the end of the day it was just some really small breast tissue (or Gynaecomastia in medical terms), small enough that it is not visible at all from the outside.

To be honest, I was optimistic throughout the whole process and decided that until they say otherwise it's nothing to worry about but still is was not a pleasant experience and there was some level of shame involved when I went to get the mammogram and I was the only man there getting looks from all of the women including the receptionist who thought I got there by mistake at first and asked me what I was doing there.

Bottom line, everything is ok and it was just a scare BUT male breast cancer is real! And feeling ashamed to go get tested or ignoring signs because of what people might say may cause late diagnostic and sometime it can be too late.

So here's to raise awareness to male breast cancer, I wish nothing but long and healthy lives to us all filled with watches of all kinds.

Outside of the salubrious world of watches, and music, my other interest is climbing.
I can’t relate to any charities on a personal level, but I am reminded of how humanity can exist in the most hostile, and precarious of environments, and how words can, sometimes, be more powerful than actions.

In 1992, Joe Simpson, a notable British climber, was pushing for the summit of Everest. He was camped high up on the South Col, along with a contingent of other climbers, of varied nationalities. Not thirty yards from the summit camp, lay a dying Indian climber.

I don’t want to push on the moral ethics of climbing here, but there is an unwritten protocol among high altitude climbers that should one get into difficulty above a certain altitude, you’re on your own - period.

As other climbers were stepping over the dying man, Simpson approached him and offered him a few words of comfort before he died. There was no drama or heroics, just somebody offering comfort when there was nothing else to give.

Sometimes a little empathy goes a long, long way.

In this respect, I’d like to highlight a charity, that fortunately, I’ve never had to call upon, namely the volunteers of the mountain rescue teams of England and Wales: https://www.mountain.rescue.org.uk/

Here’s an old photo of me, belaying a second climber, and bringing him up through a cornice, on the summit of Helvellyn, in the English Lake District. I wouldn’t have had anything special on my wrist at that time, just a nondescript altimeter watch.

Thanks to @Guy0783

Have a good one, Luke

Lovely gesture and actually a lovely watch. My choice is https://www.leukaemiauk.org.uk/ for very personal reasons....
I actually jumped out of a plane at 15000 feet to raise money for this charity!
A good choice of charity indeed; thanks for reminding me of it.

While rummaging through some old keepsakes I came across the little autograph book from my junior school days and stopped at a special page; the end of school message from a childhood sweetheart. Two years after this message she was dead; taken by leukemia.
The splotches were made by my tears in 1978.
Sometimes we see stuff online and we think little of the painful stories behind. Forty four years on and I can still vividly recall chasing one another round the little fir tree in the garden....she will never be forgotten.

I have been running these past 3/4 years to support the breast cancer research (https://www.think-pink.be/en/)

Unfortunately, this year 20km race was cancelled due to Covid but this was the previous race! I have many ladies in my life who are survivors and my 20km pain is nothing compared to what they overcame!
