Advice on restoration of Vintage Geneve Cal 1010 in Gold case

Hi all

I have my late dad’s Geneve, he was presented it in 1976 by the company he worked for.

It’s not worked for approximately 5-10 years as the crown has come off (I have it).

Been thinking about having it repaired and serviced, so I went into the local Omega AD and they said it would need sending off to Omega in Switzerland, and quoted a starting price of £1400, I Also took it to a watch repair ‘chain’ at the local shopping centre who said best estimate would be around £600.

I have been advised though to join this forum and see if there are any horologists local to me (Barnsley, UK) as this would be the best way to go for the care of the watch.

The watch was presented to my dad in 1976 but I’m unsure of the year of manufacture, I’m also unsure whether it’s gold plated or solid gold.

Any info / advice / suggestions of local watchmakers who would be good contacts is welcome.

The lugs don’t have hallmarks, so it is unlikely to be a Swiss gold case.
However, the engravings on the back are quite deep, so it could be a UK cased gold watch.
(E.g. Shackman for Omega )

There does look to be some ‘peeling’ on the rear of the bottom left lug - so perhaps investigate that.

Only way to really tell would be to get the back off.

For mending/servicing try Mitka or the Watchguy.

Not local to you but both in the UK and both frequently recommended.
As long as there is nothing major wrong, a service should cost around £200.

Nice old buckle too. Can you show photo of other side of buckle may have some info to ID the maker.

Just updated the thread title to make it more specific, definitely get an independent service on this one it’ll be vastly cheaper and just as good as long as they have access to parts.

There's no direct advertising here to my knowledge, but you can google them. Mitka is a member.

I think it’s either gold filled or plated. Hard to tell, but looks like wear on the upper left lug on the side. Also some green corrosion on the bezel up and left of the crown area.

Is there any broken piece of the stem in the crown? Hard to tell

Could be a 50x movement or 55x movement. Should be ble to see this if the back is removed. Will also get the reference case number on the inside back

£600 is too much and mentioned £200 is fairer unless some parts need to be replaced

Just a question - I have said no on the booking form to new crystal - is this the right thing to do?

It doesn’t look like an original Omega Crystal that’s on there now.

So you have two options:
If Christian can source an Omega crystal you could have it replaced. (Not cheap nowadays)
Or
If there are no cracks in the existing crystal Christian will be able to polish it and it will look much better.

Thats so cool! 👍 I love that engraving.

I would clean it up a little with a damp cloth and a soft brush or tootpick, just to get the worst grime of before sending it away.

No professional watchmaker with access to original parts will service this for 200 pounds. 350 is much more reasonable if no parts would be needed. you will need a crown for sure. The glass will need replacement . After all these years anew mainspring should be part pf the service for sure as well.

Christian is highly professional and his service list price is £195. Excluding crown.
He will give best advice regarding meeting @barnsleyshaun ‘s objectives for the watch.

English made 9k case by Shackman.
London made with date letter for 1976.
These cases were made under licence for Omega.

Thanks again for the info - so is the case back and front /lugs 9k gold then or just the case back - out of interest which marking is the year of manufacture?
