LESSON LEARNED - ENABLE TFA (YES YOU!)
Read this is you would like to avoid (
best case scenario):
• exposing your personal message information
• exposing other forum members to fraudulent sales posts or worse
• embarrassingly begging the assistance of 1-6 mods
• embarrassingly requiring the assistance of a mod for 20-30 minutes of their precious time
• frustratingly resetting all your passwords
• enduring an unexpected morning’s worth of panic and your own waisted time, and
•
having to see Ads
This morning I woke up to
ADS on omegaforums (the horror!) because I had been logged out of my account.
Looking next at my email, I’d received a password and email reset notification -
my omegaforums account had been hacked.
Suddenly, my mind started racing over all the
possible personal information in my OF private messages, from having completed many purchases/sales over the years.
Anxiety reaching higher, I realized I had no way to contact the mods.
I began text messaging the one mod for whom I have irl information, and setting up a new account (name: “iwashacked”),
then panic-messaging not one but FIVE other mods.
I was reaching for my bug-out bag when
@dsio responded to my ghost account message, and
deleted the two “for sale” posts created on OF by the hacker (seeking to scam fellow members).
@
dsio then spent the next 20+ minutes graciously guiding me through securing my email address, reestablishing my OF account, reconfirming ky account security and TFA, and observing my embarrassing come-down from the panic high.
Like some of you I’m sure, I’d seen this earlier announcement of TFA availability and passed by it casually.
Had I paid attention, it would have taken 2-3 minutes to complete and avoid this mornings circus.
So, if you would like to avoid all this (
best case scenario),
enable TFA now
