Thanks for sharing those remarkable watches, @chunkythebulldog. I must say I cannot get my head around the Patek combination of a sports watch with profusely inlaid diamonds.....

Yes market value around £300k for an unopened one. Client bought it back in 2016 but can’t get insured on it for replacement value so it’s been left in the AD’s safe since then. Bit of a waste if you ask me.
This is the kind of nonsense that goes on the watch business these days. Someone buys an expensive watch and then won't wear it because he can't get insurance for it. Obviously he was no watch lover. Putting the idea of insuring personal items aside, if you aren't capable of wearing a watch because you are afraid of theft or damage, then don't buy it. I've collected for many years and have had some expensive watches, a couple even over $100k, but I never feared wearing them. I wouldn't wear them if I was going to some high crime countries, or bar hopping after midnight in a large city, but if I was going around in generally safe areas absolutely no thought of not wearing them. I've bought and worn high value watches in Saudi Arabia, Australia, Switzerland, Singapore, Thailand......no issues. Just use common sense.

That's the beauty of luxury, some just don't like diamonds or jewels on their watches, fine. But when you handle a watch like that with top grade diamonds beautifully set, it makes sense from many angles.

Speaking for myself Why bother to notify the AD that would not discount the watch. Let the shop learn from their own mistakes in business practices. I would just move on and never do business with the shop. Simple solution is He who has the gold rules I chose where to spend my money “gold”

Lovely Cornes De Vache.
True story: I was at C&H ValleyFair last week, I asked a young lady if I could see the Cornes De Vache, she looked at me stunned and asked me “ you want to see a Horny watch?” I should have said yes, see what she would bring out.

I walked out with a 1942, triple calendar, instead.

If the AD takes it out of the safe 10 times a day to impress prospective customers, I'm not sure the owner of the watch made the right decision. I doubt the AD will repay him £300k if something happens to his watch...

I don’t think the guy in the AD gets a million quids worth of watches out for anyone other than special customers (like Mr Bulldog. )
It was a special favour for a special customer because he knew we would appreciate the watches.

Last time we visited he presented us with this special platinum ‘Mecca’ world timer - not many of these about and lovely to see such an unusual piece.

LMAO, he can afford a £300k watch, but cant get insured. That just doesn't ring true to me. Might be a bit of poetic licence from dealer.

Bit of thread drift but you might enjoy some of the pieces that the AD pulled out of the safe for Phil and myself to look at.

PS, @Peemacgee that’s the last time you choose the meeting place. A cafe that only serves a Vegan or Vegetarian Breakfast 😲😲

A factory fresh 5131 enamel dialled world timer

Still sealed 5976 Nautilus 40th anniversary

Full factory diamond bezel 5270g.
Phils gonna pick this bad boy up when he wins the Euromillions.

Full rose gold 5204 split seconds

Not to some peoples tastes but circa £1m in those 4 watches. Lucky to see them, never be able to afford them.

I love the WT & Nautilus, 5270g withougt diamond bezel I would also love & the same for 5204 in WG or plat.

If only dreams materialised.

No the watch when bought for RRP was around £65k figure. Market Value now around £300k. BS or not it was nice to see it.

I've got a friend who's got the 5711P 40th Anniversary. Similar sort of value. He's a painter & decorator and uses it as his daily beater. No poetic licence on that as @Peemacgee can confirm who's met him.

Ok,

Thanks for clearing up, however from a value point of view, if the watch/item is still produced it is unreasonable to expect an insurer to value at grey market prices. They should only cover New replacement cost, the fact that there is a wait list is not the problem of the insurance company only rises in MRSP.

It was a Limited Edition piece brought out to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Nautilus in 2016. Limited to about 800 pieces so not every Patek AD got a piece in to sell. Like all Nautilus / Aquanauts of late the price has gone completely crazy.

With regard to insurance value you can insure them for whatever you want but it will be reflected in your annual premiums. All mine are insured for RRP and not MV. On the basis that if I do need to replace a watch for whatever reason that I'm a good enough customer that my AD will get me another one. But after this thread maybe not. 🫨🫨

all true I’m afraid to say.
It’s probably in this shot somewhere - platinum rather than white gold IIRC
(Fairly sure it’s the hairy little arm in the middle)

Thanks Chunkythebulldog, I now understand that it was LE and therefore not replaceable.

I still don't get why someone would buy a beautiful thing if they can't insure or are unwilling to insure.

Where do the derive the pleasure of ownership, if they have to visit a shop to see it. I can do that😀.

I am extremely appreciative of your input & explanation.

If it goes missing from the AD's safe what does the owner get? Probably £65k. Trying to liquidate it thru an AD is a tough slog. If I was the lucky owner I would be uneasy having the watch at the dealer. There are better ways to sell it.

he’s not trying to sell it.
It’s there temporarily (literally) for safe keeping.

I’m fairly sure that, given the other watches and jewellery on the premises, the AD has sufficient insurance cover, which we must presume was offered to their client.
(Or you would be pretty foolish to leave a £300k watch with them)

The AD has both new and used watches on site (the Mecca world timer is ‘second hand’ and rather expensive) so they are used to holding watches that are worth more than their RRP
