No gears or balance wheels to break in these.

Thank you all for your input and he has gone with STANDY and his suggestion
This watch has just been ordered plus given its price I have just got a G shock from e bay for £25.When he gets back and gets a JOB I have promised him my Submariner. My other son now wants to know what he will get as he is climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in August and if this watch is ok I will get him one as well.
STANDY should be on a retainer for Luminox
Update 3m into the trip
Luminox watch is surviving everything Australia throws at it which to date has seen it skydive, scuba dive on the barrier reef and its most rigorous test 5 weeks (to date) on a banana plantation 1 hour out of Cairns where it has met saltwater/fresh water crocodiles and almost weekly meetings with brown snakes (only Australians would name a highly venomous snake with such a dull albeit accurate name) but apparently the most impressive wild life is the local Australian females.
These ladies are out muscling, drinking and partying males from across the globe on a daily basis
What worries me most though is that the farmer has trusted the wearer of the watch with a razor sharp machete and allows him to use it near other humans but he seems to be keeping his blood lust under control by having regular periods on "cane toad patrol"
The watch has been admired not only by numerous nationalities but by the foreman on the farm who is going to get one for himself so the advice proffered here continues to be passed forward
.
FWIW: A black terrycloth wristband (sweatband) can help the watch from getting as banged up as it would otherwise and is a convenient way to avoid as much attention when it isn't wanted.

I would also suggest something that is not eye catching and with that I mean forget a metal bracelet. Not only will people in the street be attracted but so will everyone in the dorms at the hostels. I highly suggest something he will never need to take off and I would go for rubber bracelet or those HIRSH rubber/leather bracelets that can handle water. Forget the big names and go for something that is under the radar.
With this comes to mind Eterna and Tissot. He can always get himself a cheap travel clock.
I didn't think about a Nato but for sure interesting and durable.
