Pfft - wimps. In the dim and distant past when I was being schooled in Scotland, the tawse was the disciplinary instrument of last resort. Sort of a thick leather cat o' two tails. It left a very distinctive mark on your hands 😲

Yes exactly. If you think I'm blaming the kids you didn't read what I wrote.

Trust me the parents who want their kids to accomplish what they couldn't do themselves that I blame. The problem is we will all pay for it in the end...

Not in public school, but at home. Very similar paddle, but plywood and with drill holes to help increase velocity. And no fancy paint job.

For me if I got the strap at school I knew that it would be 10X worse when I got home...

Mom had Bolo paddles all over the house, one never more than arms length away, it seemed.

My brother and I kept her pitching arm limbered, 80/20 my brother did more to keep that arm warmed.

When I was in school, both public & private schools used canes. Public schools caned the palm, but private schools caned the butt.

For the lolz, pinged half a dozen primary school teachers I know about this , on a Friday night, for the lolz, they still support this. No one heard of an edict to go digital.
This reminds me of an April Fool’s prank (by a newspaper I think) from the 1970s. They recommended that watch owners remove the caseback of their digital watch, where they would find a button to change the watch to metric, base 10 time, which was to be be introduced globally.
However, IMHO the kids who don’t understand analogue time would probably struggle equally with ‘metric’ time...

I bought my first 'vintage' watch new in 1971.

It was an Omega Geneve Chronostop on a mesh strap and cost me £21 as a special mail order offer in a national paper.

As I was only earning £8 a week I had to buy it on credit making weekly payments.

Yesterday I bought 2 coffees and 2 cakes in Pret a Manger for £8.30 - a sign of the times!

That's a good question - it was early Sunday morning and they did fall a little short of their usual standard.

Just picked up a little Timex for my five year old... can’t tell you the exact time yet but can let you know what hour it is 👍

My mom's weapon of choice was hot wheel track, and when that was too slow to access then a coat hanger. But the paddle above was in the vice principals office and we met a couple of times. Seemed inappropriate as my only crime ever was 3 warnings for talking in class > then paddle.
