A sad and sorry ( omega) tale!

On a recent meet up with a friend of mine he announced he'd bought a watch. " A nice one" he said beaming with glee. When I asked what it was he told me it was a black dialled Omega cosmic that he'd purchased for £700 off ebay. My heart sank a little as my pal knows nothing about watches and had done no research at all on what he was buying. £700 is a sizeable chunk of change for a punt on a watch. On seeing the watch, I had my reservations about it but a quick search to verify authenticity proved trickier than I thought as there were various references of the Cosmic and anyhow my friend was happy. The watch kept time well and he was proudly walking around with his £700 vintage Omega.

This week I saw him again and he told me that there was a problem with his Omega. He told me he had gone on a date with a girl and the activity they had chosen was Kayaking. As to why he went Kayaking on an early date I can but speculate but when he told me he had worn the Omega and then capsized his vessel I almost choked on my Guinness. " But it said waterproof on the back" he said sadly. He took the watch to a repair shop in London who charged him a £45 inspection fee to tell him the watch needed repairs totalling £400. At this point I told him to get the watch back. What will he do with it? I have told him to cut his losses and start again. What do you guys think?

Any pics of the aftermath? If he's going to start again, he should be able to recoup some of the costs by selling the bracelet.

These pics are after the "flooding". It has been opened up and inspected so I am assuming it's dried out. It is still running so maybe the worst outcome has been avoided.

If the service includes parts for that price, there can’t be a huge amount of rust inside. It likely needed a service anyway, so if he likes the watch, he should probably go ahead...

The one thing he did do right was take it to a watchmaker straight away. This has probably minimised any damage.

Was there a second date?
You're too old fashion... Why should there be a second one??? ... Why kayak? ... Wet t-shirt, need to dry afterwards... Etc etc... 😀

That was already an expensive first date haha

Nope. He told me that they got drunk she suggested they go back to hers and he said no. That told him all he needed to know!!

I originally thought that “he capsized his vessel” was a euphemism for the date going horrible wrong 😁

I’m a sea kayaker and we have a saying: “There are two kinds of kayakers. Those who have capsized and those who will.” That’s why learning to roll is an essential skill for the sport.

A quick observation - that case is for a regular Seamaster Cosmic Day-Date reference. I’d have originality reservations with it hosting a Cosmic 2000 dial.
Nice BoR bracelet and endlinks.

I know what you mean. I have worries about it too but my pal ( a non watch guy) likes it so I have decided not to p*ss on his chips.

Yeah, fair enough. As a non-watch guy, i can understand that if you see he’s made up with it - that’s probably all that matters.
