A discussion regarding practicality, durability, and preservation of vintage vs modern

I have a single Seiko quartz that is a gift from my wife who thought I'd appreciate it in advance of a trans-Atlantic trip taken in the late 1990s. It satisfies my need for quartz.

As my daily grind occurs in an office in a bank lobby, my preferred vintage watches' exterior surfaces aren't exactly stressed so I enjoy wearing them daily.

Even the beaters here are vintage. I have an Enicar, a Mido Multifort, a couple of Zodiac Rotographics, and this favorite post-war to 1960 (?) vintage Glycine which sees most weekend chores duties, waterfowling and other hunting and shooting activities. The silly thing is bulletproof, keeps better time than most any watch in the menagerie here. The local watch shop said it was gaining 3 second per day before a service last year.

I dive with my red sub and will wear a 321 Speedmaster when I land on the moon. A well cared for vintage will do what it designed to do.

buy and wear what you want, how you want to. If as you say you're a wearer not a hoarder then simply be aware that these are 50+ year old mechanical devices with lots of small parts. These things break. It's as inevitable as the Cubs not winning a World Series.

find a good watch guy, spend money keeping your watches fit for purpose and appreciate the beauty and technical brilliance of the tiny little mechanical device you're wearing on your wrist.

As most have already described we have a pool of watches worn on a rotation basis that limits wear and gives us options as to style and circumstance.

only your wife can tell you you've spent too much money.

Hey now let's not start with these type of derogatory remarks, even tough it may be true, it's like kicking someone when there down...down for a really long time.😉

Maybe, but that "loveable loser" routine wore really thin on me in 2003, when I witnessed the entitled behavior of the Cubs fans here in the NLCS. It was as if everyone owed them the World Series.

Later in the series the entire city of Chicago beat up on some poor kid who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Like he personally let the Marlins score eight runs that inning.

Nah, they can wait another 106 years for all I care.

true, that should have been "handle" differently... Not a Cubs fan, just a baseball fan.. but Joe Maddon is a good coach and Theo Epstein looks like he knows what he is doing, plus did I mention they have a good young pool of players 😀
