To ‘tie-up’ your Connie.
Ref 14381
Cal 551 automatic movement
Correct crown
Should date to no later than say 1963

You should have it serviced if you’re going to wear it and you will be able to get the movt serial number to date it a little more accurately when the back is off.
(If you let folks know what State you’re in you should get recommendations for a trusted watchmaker)
The bracelet being US made does support my theory that it may have been added later (it’s stylistically at odds with the age of the watch- hence my original comment)
- and it would be a little perverse for the US forces to export Omega bracelets from the States to Germany for sale in their force’s shops there.

Short of needing the cash, I would never part with this watch - forget the Ex and your son (and the value) wear it for you because it’s stunning and is a momento of your father.

If you want to know more about Constellations- this should keep you busy for a few days.

So based on MSNWatch in his fantastic post and I sincerely hope he doesn't mind me using it. I really should do maintenance and I need to know what you would think best for both watches I really want to avoid the blunders specific to these two watches only. Only the experts will know! I need to write my cards!!!

If there is one thing to remember forever in collecting vintage omegas, it is that condition is first and foremost. Of course the piece has to be original in the first place but if there is one lesson that has been imparted to me and one I wish to pass on it is that.

As I have stated in another thread, it is far better to overpay for an excellent original vintage omega than to underpay for one in below average or average condition. My greatest regrets in this hobby have been not overpaying for excellent examples - if only I could raise my offer some more for these long gone and in many cases never to be seen for sale again examples.

Other rules I TRY to live by:

Better to have 1 excellent piece than 3-4 so-so ones.

Never sell to a dealer - you will never get close to what your watch is worth.

Ebay is the best place to get nice vintage omegas at reasonable prices IF and only IF you have the knowledge and patience to sift through the many many crappy pieces.

If you do not know the seller always pay via paypal using your credit card - that way you will have some recourse if the deal goes wrong - and if you do enough deals something will inevitably not go your way.

You should have 1 or 2 trusted watchmakers preferably someone local. And when you have something repaired be explicit about what you want done and not done - I attach an index card with written instructions for every watch I have serviced - want to make sure everything is crystal clear.

@MoonPie it is then.
The case on the Constellation is almost certainly stainless steel.
White gold Connies do exist but are very uncommon and gold cases would usually be marked with external hallmarks, generally on the back of the lugs.
For clarity, I think the medallion is rose gold but the furniture is silver coloured not rose and as @BenBagbag said, likely rhodium plated.
BTW Connie is just an affectionate name for all Constellations as each of the numerous case styles were available with both pie pan and dome dials (and railtrack in this particular reference)

Glad to hear we’ve convinced you to keep your watches👍

The Connie is stunning. I have a soft spot for these though and often wear my 14381. I'd get it serviced and wear it, I believe that realistically you can get one for around a $1000. I picked up this one around a year ago for $750 and it had just been serviced.
