A black crosshair De Ville, is it OK?

Hello all!

I'm not sure of this one... It does look OK to me but I have seen lots of them be redialled (usually not in gilt though), I'm a bit paranoid. Here is what I have.

"Automatic" may be misaligned, or it is the parallax with the applied logo. I really don't know.

Any idea about the ballpark value if real? The case is gold capped (half stainless steel). I'm stupidly tempted.

I can’t imagine anyone is faking these in gold capped, let along one in that shape- it would have been “freshly restored”.

Interesting find and it would fool me as I haven't handled many Devilles in black.

I think the OP is solely referring to the dial.

Are you trying to hide some of the printing with the hour hand? 😉

I don't think he bought it or has it in his possession yet, hence the "stupidly tempted".

If it’s actually gilt, it’s probably good. I’m on my phone so I can’t great resolution on the pics, all of the black redials are glossy black with print stamped in paint.

Not following these so I can’t help on price.

Right, my point was that with the watch in that condition- we could assume it is legit as repainting Deville dials black is an affect of the post Don Draper era.

I would say original. With some tlc this watch can look fantastic. I think I would replace the plexi and put the watch on a brown/cognac leather strap. Even with the probably mediocre case and damaged crown I still can see this easily sell for eur 650-850. That black dial seems to be in great shape.

I missed that. Anyway, I'm not seeing any obvious problems but it's hard to be 100% certain because of the photo quality. So there's some risk, but also a nice potential upside.

Thanks!

Not bought it indeed, price is quite steep imho (just shy of 900eur). But as @Shabbaz said, it could just look great! If it is real.

The seller has a small ebay shop full of bits and pieces, not watch oriented. My gut tells me it is real but I wanted to get some advice.

A picture of the back :

Fresh from the ol' drawer... wrist cheese and all.

I figured you missed the "stupidly temped" but I also understood your winking emoji that clued us all in that you were aware and was teasing him over the hand position as if he was responsible. 😁

I would have expected even higher, honestly, but that's just a gut feeling. I haven't looked enough to know what they're going for.

I am far from a true expert, but I would vote for genuine. As @JwRosenthal points up it doesn't fit the MO of a redailer. All the evidence points to the conclusion that this watch has not been tampered with recently. So if it is a redial, it would have been an old one. The gilt printing looks really good. Occam's razor says it is original.

Even if an original black dial, with corroded hands and likely needing a service, at 900 there’s not a lot of value there with a gold plate case imo. Already priced at market.

As I said back in my first post I think it's genuine, but I should mention that there is no "MO" rule of thumb to go by for redialed vintage pieces. Old valuable watches that are not recently "gussied up" and look ratty are more likely than not original? I have handled more "as found" grungy watches with old redials than I care to remember. Especially when it comes to Rolex and Omega.
