A black crosshair De Ville, is it OK?

One can bet the Ebay seller has 😁
Probably so. I just did a cursory check and the only comparisons I saw are repainted. They sold for north of 1000, but were in much better shape than this one.

This one is not in bad shape, it is mostly grungy. You should see how my other one looked before :

And after:

But it was 500eur (OK, a few years ago)

Steel with gold bezel would be the second most desirable behind all steel so this is a plus on the valve side. The gold-filled ones on the bottom and most common target of the redialers. I don’t think the price is bad for a nice un molested example.

OK, F- it: I'm buying it. Returns allowed, 14 days period to retract, more than enough to assess if the dial is OK or not (I may ask some advice here, even if ordinarily I don't need to when I have the thing in hand).

I'll report back in a few days, with good news hopefully.

Edit: thanks to all of you, it is nice to have some advice!

I would be curious what @seekingseaquest thinks.
Original IMO, though better (or more) photos always help, particularly to confirm the fonts are gilt.

Regarding price, I’d say it’s about at value for a nice black dial SMDV. But it’s the crosshair that makes this one special since they’re so uncommon. This marker style is one of the “known” variants, so that’s a good sign for original.

I don't know if I've ever seen a convincing repainted ribbon dial, so I think you're good.
I don’t think it’s a ribbon dial - I think it’s an effect of the photos (see the lines in the red background in the second photo)

Oh, how weird. I see now that the lines go across the dial in the other photo, so you're absolutely correct.

This is not a De Ville, but a Seamaster de Ville. Two different lines.

And as I have recommended this very watch on this forum a few days ago already, I think this one is genuine and will look awesome after a service, with a new crystal and a nice leather strap.

I've never seen fonts disappear/change on a patinated/damaged "gilt" dial, so maybe it's the same method - but my experience is limited

Come to think about it, I don't think the base plate has a silver color on grey "gilt"s, but the fonts are silver, so maybe a base coat that's strong and paint on top, opening up one of these watches could shed more light

It arrived! There is a fine dust like patina on the dial. It does not look like a redial to me, even if it is not perfectly aligned. Some mock modern Seikos for this, they should see some vintage Rolex or Omega... 😁

What looks like rotor drag is actually a ring of dirt. The movement does not look abused, nor water damaged (a water damaged movement is a good pointer to a redial).

That thing is gonna clean up beautifully!

I think the underside of the dial was a definite proof for these, there was a thread on it a while ago but I forgot, the underside should have black paint too?

From what I can see, the underside is Matt black.

Here is the underside :

Fun fact: fastening the horrible bracelet to the case were what looked like OG omega bars (shoulderless with tabs).
