Out of the three I’d go for the constellation. After all it’s a constellation.😀

A Constellation that would meet your dad's budget is the 167.021 from the late 60s (to mid 70s). Flat dial and powered by the ultra-thin 712 caliber. It's only 33mm in diameter but appears larger in my opinion.

I'll have a search now for that model.

I've just found this 1967 Constellation for sale. $470.
Went up for sale 4 days ago. I've messaged the seller to see if it is still available. Got a feeling it would have been snatched up by now though.

I too think you'll struggle to get a nice healthy curved lug, dog leg lug or hidden crown Connie for much less than a grand unless it has issues, the OP budget should buy a nice C case as seen in the post directly above though. If it must be 1960s, be aware that the C case and super slim 33mm 712 movement model continued well into the 1970s.

That watch is cheap for a reason.

One thing I don't think has been discussed is if there is a preference on OPs part is stainless steel vs gold plated/capped.

Stainless steel will generally be the more the expensive option.

More sage advise.

I kind of alluded to it earlier but you are quite right and gold filled or plated less expensive again ( but often not recomended).

Was discussing with my dad before, regarding the advice on here. Shown him the Constellation 167.021 as one of the recommendations. He likes it. And he now understands more regarding the limitations of his budget.

During the day, he's found another example of a Seamaster Deville Cal 601 that's being sold at auction and ending sometime tonight. He's sent me some pics. However no pic of the movement as the seller, apparently, doesn't feel confident/doesn't have the tools to open it ...

What do we think? What price should he be looking to get it for? ... I've advised him to continue looking for a Constellation and spend a bit more time. But anyway ...

Sellers typically can't show the movement in a monocoque case like that. I'm not seeing any major problems with that watch at first glance, just some general condition issues.

I feel he should hang fire, personally, and seek out a Constellation. But, he'll probably end up getting a Constellation anyway, regardless.

Do we have an idea what his max bid should be?

The prices of that seller seem pretty reasonable but bear in mind that if you buy from Japan you will get hit for VAT and duty when it comes in. It works out at around 21% of the price paid plus the shipping fee extra, yes they charge VAT on the shipping too.

If youre in the UK bear in mind you’ll need to add around 25-30% import duty to anything outside the UK.

Actually, the prices look excellent even adding the 25% or whatever it is tax! I wonder if he has the stock in hand or is a re-lister. There are plenty of those in Japan but it doesn't mean you wont get what you buy I guess.

The Yen is such a train wreck right now that it’s a great time to buy from Japan.

These are very interesting watches but a bit of an outlier in terms of mainstream Constellations- hence the cost to buy - however, they are also quite uncommon to find on the open market.
