3861 movement broken? *Update: Read First Post*

Will do. I hope its not a norm for the 3861 to stop with the chronograph running with 10-15 hours left on the main spring. Time will tell no pun intended. Ill report back.

A fully wound 3861 will run for 60-63 hours with the chrono off, about 12 hours longer than an 1861. This is what owner's are reporting in the field. You should do the test @Archer has suggested and report back, there is probably no issue. A watch that has a stated 2 day reserve (50 hours for an 3861 per Omega) should be wound every 24 hours, that's standard, and best, practice. I don't know what standards NASA used but it wouldn't have been longer than 24 hours, and maybe less before a Speedmasrer was rewound. You can be assured the Apollo 13 crew didn't start their 14.5 second burn with a Speedmaster with an unknown state of wind.

You could find that it stops 10-15 hours sooner with the chrono running, but the watch isn't designed to be used like that, it should be wound every 24 hours, usually when you put it on in the morning.

Makes sense. As long as I don't have issue in the first 45 hours or so ill be good. If everything goes wonky after 50 then im ok as thats a bonus hitting 60 etc. Just want the watch to perform within spec which is 50 hours.

Slightly off topic for the 3861 but my curiosity is piqued regarding this particular trial for the 1863 so I’m going to try the same. ‘Will advise just for S’s and G’s.

Richard - sounds like it needs looking at. Similar to mine. Get it in got a service and it will be fine.

do the test the chaps suggest and then report back.

I'll report back in 50 hours. Supposedly this thing stretches to 60-65 hours or so. Its only advertised to 50 so I expect it to function properly during the time frame. I may have been seeing these issues past 50 hours?

With this being the case, what would the consequences be, if any, of doing a full wind every 2 days (48 hours) with minimal chrono use in between full winds?

Only consequence may be a slight loss of precision as the second day wore on, but I haven't checked it to see if it's significant. The problem with winding it every other day is you will eventually forget to wind it and you'll end up with a stopped watch during the middle of the third day. Unless a manual watch has a long term design (like a 7 or 8 day movement) they are expected to be wound every day, for most people that is when they put it on in the morning. It's a 15 second exercise.

So after fully winding the watch until I could not turn it anymore almost 24 hours ago the chronograph has been rock solid so far knock on wood. I’m hoping it gets through most of the 50 hr power reserve without this issue. I have a theory and maybe Archer can let us know if this is a possibility. Obviously I didn’t fully wind the watch the first time but could replicate the issue multiple times even though there was about 10 hours left in the power reserve. I read others are getting over 60 hrs power reserve for the 3861. I’m wondering if its possible I was having these issues after the watch hit the 50 hr rated PR? I’m hoping it doesn’t have any issues within the advertised 50hrs and I may be ok? Ill keep you posted.

As a future potential owner of the new 3861 Speedy, this is a bit disheartening to read but based on my experience with Omega's customer service, I'm sure they'll get it right by you. Best of wishes!
On a related note, I wonder how many more are experiencing this issue out of the thousands...

Just for comparison/discussion:

48 hours ago I gave my 1863 a full wind and activated the chronograph. The chrono ran without interruption for 40 hours and then during the last 8 hours I have stopped and then reactivated the chrono 4 times. Now at the 48 hour point, the watch is running on with the chrono also running. Omega states that this model has a 48-hour reserve.

I will let the watch run on with the chrono activated to see what the ultimate run time is, and then to see if deactivation of the chrono once the watch has stopped will reactivate the escapement until total depletion.

Edit for final: The watch stopped at 48:45 of continuous running with the chronograph activated throughout the run - Multiple stops and reactivation of chrono. When the watch finally stopped with the chrono engaged, I stopped/zero’d the chrono and the watch re-started. I then reactivated the chrono and the full kit is running on. Based only upon this one example, it appears that the 1861/1863 will run throughout it’s published power reserve with the chrono engaged.

My AD contacted the official Omega service center and they confirmed its an issue with a bushing and they already have 4 3861 watches on the bench waiting for the corrected bushings to arrive from Omega. Many current 3861s are still shipping with this issue and there is no way to tell if you get a corrected one or not until you exp the issue. Im not sure when the problem was corrected and how long it take to be trickled down into the new movements. They are looking into giving me a refund and I may sit this one out for awhile as I don't want to keep exchanging or end up sending a brand new watch off to Omega for 4-6 weeks. It's an easy fix but with the backlog in the parts and service it might be weeks. They will be corrected eventually but just not something I want to deal with on a brand new watch. Id like to just sit this one out for a bit until they fully correct the issue and repurchase it from my same AD later.

Omega should know from the serial number and IMHO, should call in what has been shipped rather than keep shipping them out.
