I'm not certain I understand why the re-boot of this classic brand would send prices of vintage pieces upward. Is it part of the overall marketing strategy and bringing in a new set of customers that were not already UG people? I'd be grateful to learn from anyone who has a background of marketing and its logic!

Marketing 101 says rebuild interest in a brand or model and it has a spillover effect on the used market. Can't afford $15k for a new one? You go looking for used.

Thanks for replying. I can kind of understand the marketing basics, but there are some vintage models that were never going to be particularly affordable unless you are a very dedicated collector and/or have wheelbarrows of cash earmarked for developing a collection. How does the re-boot re-brand effect that part of the market?

It should be interesting to see as it unfolds. Sometimes an unanticipated event changes things in a whole other direction too.

Many of the super premium Swiss watches like Patek have heritage departments that service watches no matter how old. That alone I think would be a big plus. Increased brand awareness would also lift all ships, as long as it’s done in keeping with a super premium branding. But the problem I see is that per the Hodinkee article, back in the day UG was not a super premium brand. After reading that article I’m much less bullish on price appreciation.

Because of the taste and association issues with grail watches? Ie that UG was not super premium, yet it might be said that twists of fate made some watches particularly desirable even though they were not necessarily in keeping with the highest quality in materials and manufacture. And the more that a particular type of watch might get a buzz, the more it gets buzz. Kind of like tulipmania, I guess?

Kern seemingly wears an Evil Nina
Kind of surprising that Kern didn't elect to wear a vintage Polerouter for this interview. It would have been appropriate as a nod to the inspiration of the past and to supporting the UG Polerouter collectors.

Regarding potential price appreciation due to the returm of the UG brand, the recent reissue of modern iconic Zenith models should provide a data point, albeit not an exact match.

Although I own a vintage A386, I have not followed the Zenith market closely enough to say what, if any, impact the Zenith reissues have had on vintage Zenith values.

Does anyone have perspective on the Zenith market as a comparison?

Great news for collectors. This will send vintage prices rocketing ...

I really wonder if the prediction of rising vintage prices is correct.
On the one hand, of course, it's great awareness raising for the brand. More awareness = more demand = higher prices. Furthermore, the Breitling CEO stated that they want to position UG as a premium brand "above Breitling".
On the other hand, I'm not sure about if vintage prices would go up. Maybe the availability of modern "copies" (with the benefits of more waterproof cases etc) could undermine demand for the vintage ones.

Anyway.. I let's see.
