$2.5K Loss in a Fraudulent Transaction with a Hacked Account

Here are my rules:

1. If I don’t know you personally it’s PayPal with a credit card. The extra fee is negotiable, but I’m happy to eat it if the deal otherwise makes sense.

2. No wire transfers, ever, ever, ever. If a deal was big enough (which I never needed to do), I like the idea of meeting at an airport in a public place. In a situation like that, I would consider PayPal F&F. Something that large would require all sorts of paperwork to cross borders with cash if international.

3. If a local face-to-face for cash, then go to a police station or my bank.

I read the stories here and elsewhere about hacked accounts. I just shake my head and think that it’s simply not necessary to take that kind of risk. If someone is that desperate to avoid PayPal (even F&F) rules, then that’s a big warning sign.

Hope this helps,

Okay, now THAT has to be sarcasm

Also, I've brought a concealed gun to the mall several times, and I've never considered robbing anyone. It's also legal to bring a holstered weapon to the airport (open carry varies by state), so long as you don't try to bring it past the secured checkpoint/TSA. Seller can still have a gun on them unless they happen to have a flight too and are past the secured checkpoint with you.

Yep. And I’ve been licensed to carry for almost 25 years, so I carry everywhere. For me to leave mine at home is unusual. If I’m flying somewhere, I check my gun with my baggage on the plane, and try to only go places where my license is valid. But it’s definitely allowed in the ticketing area and anywhere before the secure checkpoint, in the USA. Haven’t robbed anyone yet either.

The only 2 trips recently where I didn’t bring my firearm were because I was leaving the country, and/or taking a cruise and had nowhere to store my pistol when it’s not allowed on the ship.

The guy I bought my Airking from, I knew nothing about. I had him take a selfie with his ID next to his face. I paid PP through a CC and I paid the PayPal fees to do a regular purchase for peace of mind (not f&f as I would do with Veteran members here), and it all went well, but if it went south- I had his face & ID and PayPal on my side. Can’t think of anything more you could do short of face to face in a public place.

Many exits cuts both ways though. Did you read about the theft about a month ago, in which the "buyer" was trying on the watch and just made a run for it with the watch still on his wrist?

I'm an ultra marathon runner, I'm not concerned about being able to catch someone trying to run away. As I mentioned in my post, unless you're really slow... I guess to the frail, a face-to-face exchange could be undesirable. I'm just not in that category.

Please read what I said again. I mentioned a concealed gun in the airport, not a mall. And in the mall I'm referring to someone who's there to rob someone. Since you were not in the mall for that reason, your experience is not relevant.
