New member, first post, wearing my big boy pants so feel free to give me a kicking.....

Planning on buying a used Speedy from Chrono24 website, budget not too far over £2k. Assuming best to stick to UK sellers as I'm in London to avoid delays, customs charges etc.

If there's an idiots guide here on the forum i haven't found it yet despite a bit of lurking so some noob questions for my first foray into half decent watches:

Should i worry about box and papers? Nice to have or must have?

Can I trust that sales from that Site really are 'authenticity guaranteed'?

Should i stick to watches that have been serviced?

Any particular editions to swerve or try and snag?

Cheers,
DJ72

What kind of Speedy? The budget sounds a little low for a decent Speedmaster Professional (Moonwatch), which is the first model most of us think about. And the answers to your questions may depend on the model.

I have to say i've got a bit of an aversion to the 'moonwatch' given that i don't believe for a minute we ever went to the moon but that's an arguement for another day. I suppose i could put up with the irony seeing as it's only me that would see the 'first watch to (pretend to) be on the moon' text on the underside

I wouldn't call it an argument, as I would expect an argument to have evidence on both sides. Your lack of belief, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary, is a belief. Since you choose to believe that, I can definitely understand why you would have an aversion to the Speedmaster that went to the moon, and might be interested in something different.

I would definitely up the budget, and I would definitely, if possible, look for copies of whatever it is you are looking for, with box and papers. I'm no Omega expert, but it sure appears as if there are a lot of fake speedies out there, and many of them are the date window versions, so it'll definitely pay for you to do your homework. I do often see 323.30s for a lot less than other speedies. The 323 gray dial often goes for under 2k gbp, and may fit your criteria fairly well.

There's also the speedmaster broad arrow and replica, and a whole bunch of racing versions, all very cool looking. What are you most specifically looking for? It would probably be best for you to figure out exactly what watch you want first, and then figure out what the budget should be, unless you're open to a number of different versions.

Lastly, I don't know much about Chrono24, but if it is the site that basically hooks you up with a private seller and has prices that often seem too good to be true, I personally trust it less than ebay from looking through their watches. I would love for someone with actual experience to chime in though, with how chrono24 works and whether it is reliable.

There! Finally someone talking the truth. Personally I hate watches with a date, because it imply the earth orbit the sun, witch I dont believe.

The majority watches are round, which is a subliminal way to force us believe that the Earth is round too. I demand a square Speedmaster.

I have to assume this is trolling, as people around here are generally well-informed and educated...

Certainly off topic but not trolling. You'll have to forgive me not participating in everyone's groupthink that we went to 'the moon' in a tin can made out of drywall and tinfoil back in the late 60's and that since then NASA have 'lost' the technology on how to do it and most the original footage was 'accidentally' deleted. Here's Mr Aldrin, now an old dude who doesn't give AF anymore, fessing up that they never actually went.....

(SURELY that can't be true though that can it, it goes against what the brainwashing box told you...LOL)

Anyway FWIW i'm coming around to the beauty of the 'moon' watch itself, despite the moon landings IMHO were a load of dodgy (by todays standards) cinematography, filmed by Stanley Kubrick using a large set and early green screen technology. As for the 'phone call from the moon' to the president...i can barely get a decent signal here in London half the time and there's three 5G masts a quarter mile up the road

Well I hope you have more evidence than this clip!! 🤦

In response to the kid’s question, “why has nobody been to the moon in such a long time?” Buzz replies, “because we didn’t go there [in such a long time] and that’s the way it happened … because of … money”.

In terms of your own question and deciding between full set or watch only, serviced or not serviced, manual or automatic, I think it comes down to personal preference and again “money”!! 😁

Yeah, the Apollo 11 moon landing was faked. Since it went so well, they decided to do 6 more fake missions and threw in a fake aborted mission (Apollo 13) for giggles. So proud of the thousands of folks involved in the Apollo Program to keep quiet about what really happened.

I actually wondered that yesterday, every Forum I have been a part of has a.. meme trigger troll that gets the community up in arms and after I responded initially I wondered if this was one on this forum- come-ask-about-the-moonwatch-and-then-troll-about-the-moon-landing.

anyway @DJ72 I think you're going to have to decide if you want the EXPERIENCE and data-gathering abilities of the Omega forum, or if you want to upset the Omega forum by sharing your non-scientific beliefs.

Serious question- does it not... create some dissonance for you to be asking for expert information from people that you don't accept as experts on a fundamental level because you don't accept something as reality? Just curious how that works.

I have to assume this is trolling, as people around here are generally well-informed and educated...

Yeah it's gotta be true because it was on TV etc. I venture one opinion and y'all can't help yourselves; well I apologise for derailing a genuine thread with a genuine view. We'll have to agree to disagree, i ain't here to convince anyone, i'm looking to buy my first Speedy.

Seen one 2016 for about £3400 in 'very good' condition, does that seem like a realistic price point?

Didn't Buzz punch a guy who denied the Moon landing outside of a hotel?

My advice? Just stop talking about it. Maybe even create a new thread and focus only on the questions you have.

One man's opinion on a relatively benign subject shouldn't be upsetting others just because it differs. As for dissonance, i don't think there is any, i'm happy that to get a kick in the right direction from the learned forum memebers regarding watches, but must respectfully stop short of taking any astronautical advice from any of them at the same time.
