How about this one? On sale for $850. Dial is original but repainted. New aftermarket crystal and second hand fitted. Seller says in excellent condition. I'm asking if its been serviced recently.

As above, it’s original or repainted. Cannot be both. That’s just a play on words unscrupulous dealers use to described when the original dial plate has been refinished. The thing is, the value and collectability isn’t in the original dial plate, it’s in the original painted finish that’s applied to it. Which, in this case, has been removed and reprinted.

Either this thread is a joke, or the OP needs to slow down.

No, I am looking for honest advice as its my 50th next year and wanted to get a cool vintage watch, preferably 1973. After I bought the one on ebay, I found the forum. Regret such a hasty purchase, have no experience with the market. But I don't have the budget for an expensive watch, am looking to spend $1000+ and wear it. Forgive my naivete and uncouth approach.

OK, you can get a great watch for $1000, and it sounds like you have plenty of time to be patient. If the seller will take that first watch back, return it. Then spend some time looking around the forum, and you will learn a lot.

And that’s okay to not have experience. We all started where you are and tons of us have made mistakes at one point. I personally enjoy eBay but it can indeed be difficult when you first start. This thread is something you may have already looked through but you can get something decent from here.

Look, I get where you're coming from and I was only pulling your leg a bit. But like someone said, you need to SLOOOW down. I'm not much of an expert myself but if I were you I'd spend some time browsing Omegas to see what type you like. Shape, dial, markers, hands etc Date or no date and so on. The when you've zeroed in on what you like, get to know the model and the pratfalls involved. What makes a good one, what makes a bad one, how can you tell a fake, generally what to look out for. Then come back and show what you found, I'm sure experts here will guide you so you don't step in it again. You have one whole year...

Oh, and I'm sure you'll find a kick ass watch for that money!

Will do, thanks. Connoisseur of Time will take the watch back, so now I'm on a mission. Ha!

The Connoisseur in question clearly deserves credit. That was kind of him.

Since you're looking for something to celebrate your birth year, keep in mind that the movement of any watch can be roughly dated by it's serial number (you can find the charts online). It seems movements made in 1973 have serial numbers better 36 and 38 million. However, the actual watch would have been assembled up to a couple of years later and sold even later. So a new watch sold on your birthday may have a serial number from c.1970. So if you find a watch you really like at a good price that's in that general time period (I'd personally say serial numbers between 32 and 38 million would hit the mark, maybe even earlier), you might allow yourself some wiggle room.

I really like the day/date with yellow dial 1970s Seamasters. Found this one current on auction at ebay. Seller says its all original. Currently at $615. These seems really hard to find and I haven't seen any others around like this. Are they pretty rare? What's a decent price for the watch? Seems already too expensive.

Edges look nice and sharp. Don't know the market value of these so I can't really help you there but in order to judge this one you need pics of the movement.

As you’re discovering, eBay is a bloody minefield. I get it: you’re on a mission. But hit the brakes for a moment and breathe.

Cosmic’s are cool, and pop up here on OF periodically.

It may appear self-serving to say but right now OF is the ONLY place you should be looking for your next watch. The experts are gracious with their knowledge, especially with inquiries coupled with one’s own research. Some, like @dsio, are kind enough to provide expertise on eBay finds; I suggest you start there given your predilection for that platform. If you get a refund, you are damn lucky and dodged the dreaded “noob tax”; I have also saved money by watching and waiting and trusting the community here.

There’s a reason you found OF. Welcome. It’s far and away the best watch enthusiast site on the internet, in my view.

Learn. Be patient. You’ve stuck it out for a half century (kids, today!😜). Slow down. Make it count.

These Cosmics aren’t super rare and they do not demand a premium usually. That price is already pretty high. I think it’s time for you to stay off eBay and do some research regarding prices here on OF. Utilize the search engine here and you can find past sales where Cosmics of this reference and similar have sold for sometimes under $350. These past sales will show you what you can get at an honest price from honest sellers.

Not so good question: "Has the watch been serviced recently?"

Better question: "Do you have a receipt for the watch's service?"

If the seller will send you a scan of the receipt you can look at what it says they did and for reviews of the watchmaker. If you don't find anything the watchmaker may have been an amateur on his or her first watch and you will probably need to get the watch serviced if you buy it.

Those gold dial cosmics certainly aren’t rare and servicing can be an issue due to the gaskets etc that are required to hold the case together.

Cosmic 2000s certantly are not rare I have the remains of one which I can not get into the movement. (The dial is silver.) Another post here It called this a tuna can. I am told one removes the split stem then pumps air into it until the crystal pops off.
On the other hand It can be seen on the back where I and others have attempted to insert a case knife or other tool and scratched the back a bunch of times.
I have yet to see the missing front bezel though which would hold the lugs. I sort of think the back ring is the second part of a two piece case. There is no place to grab the fron cystal with a lift.
Would be nice though if I could get into it to record the SN and the case number. (the latter would help to find the missing case parts.)
