I've just seen this that's muddying my water...a 505 seamaster with date window
I'd put money that the watch from that auction is in the same exact situation as yours: Some watchmaker a few decades ago decided it needed a new rotor and bridge, so found one off a 505 in their parts bin (or was easier to order/etc) and installed it. Now, in current times, someone takes the back plate OFF and discovers the bridge with the 505 on it, and assume that the movement is that.

Ah...so do you reckon its not a deliberate attempt at some point to deceive..rather just an easier repair..I'm never going to sell it so at least I won't have to justify its flaws.

I would also assume that it was done because someone had those spare parts.

Thanks to all who have given their input...this was my first vintage watch..bought I'd say about 10 years ago from a jewellers..I've bought others since but I shall certainly ask on this site about any others I want to bid on or buy.

From my untrained look at the movements/diagrams, the difference between the two movements is just the date complication.

It seems completely reasonable to me that back when "keeping it original" wasn't at all a priority and "keeping it running" was the only goal, that no one paid any attention to the replacement parts used.

If I were a watchmaker back then, I would imagine it would be pretty dumb to keep TWO of these bridges in stock when they were identical other than a single number printed on it, so I would have just picked up whichever was easiest to get.

Then, when the watch in question came into the shop in need of a new bridge, just grab whichever one was in my parts pile, and install that one. I'd imagine this happened reasonably often.

Remember that this is a 65+ year old watch: I'm sure it has had a number of services that weren't doing things what we now consider "the right way". When you go to an auto mechanic and he says "well, the engine part you need is identical to the one from another car: you could wait a few weeks for one with the right 'logo', or I could install the other one and you can take it today", you'd take it today basically every time, assuming they bother to ask AT ALL! These watches were the same way for most of their lives.

The date complication, the number of jewels, and the chronometer-grade adjustments/markings.

Ah, none of those are on the exploded diagrams of the parts I saw 😀 Just drawings and some measurements. But yes, now that you mention it, jewel count is different.

Also: it's not a redial; 2849s frequently don't say 'calendar' on the dial, for instance, this one:

I've just realised something...the 503 had 19 jewels ..later upgraded to 20. 505 movements had 24 jewels and it has 24 jewels stamped on the rota ..so it's either a 505 ..which technically it shouldn't be or its also had a 505 rota added as well

Right, we have been saying that the Rotor and that bridge were both swapped.
