Hi there,
I'm a noob here on this forum, but am impressed with the watches being shown! Fidjeland, your father's watch and its providence is unique!! And it looks to be in great shape! I agree with many of the people here-don't let anyone mess with it!!
I live in Canada in the city (Winnipeg) your father's flight stopped for refueling prior to heading to LAX. I was so impressed with this story, I am on the look out for a UG Polarouter/Polerouter!

Hi CdnWatchDoc,
Nice! I have a postcard that my father sent to me from Winnipeg during the refueling stop. Have you lived there all your life? I imagine it as wild, beautiful, and a little cold in winter. Is that about right?

Winnipeg is a moderate sized Canadian city, on the edge of the Canadian Shield, which is known for its forests, lakes and wild beauty. We don't have mountains, but we have endless prairie to our west, lakes and forests north, and rocky landscapes and lakes on the east (south is the USA...). In the 1950s, Winnipeg was the gateway to the North (northern Canada and the Arctic), so it made sense that SAS flew in here for fuel. We also are on a more or less direct route from the Pole to LA.
Cold? Try colder; or frigid! Yes, it is cold here in the winter, but if you can live here, you can live anywhere! We just dress for the weather! And we have wonderful weather in the summer...today was 28 C, a moderate breeze, and no mosquitoes....馃榾 I am a native 'Pegger, but have also lived elsewhere for university and professional training.

In about 15 minutes (lokal time) the president of the United States will be landing in Stockholm for a first official visit to our country ever. He will be staying here for about 24 hours. It麓s a great honour for our very small nation to host the leader of the most important and powerful nation in the world.

I see by the rope hanging from the tree that you've probably had enough winter weather. Don't do it, there's always beaches and bikinis a couple of flights away 馃榾 (haha, just noticed that was not your pic. It sure looked like Winnipeg though, fooled me).

Winnipeg is the coldest city in the world with a population over 500k, or some similar figure. Environment Canada and Wikipedia can confirm this.

I was born in Winterpeg, moved away in 2004 to escape the endless darkness and cold. I definitely don't miss it. My sister has now moved here, and my parents are just wrapping up their visa paperwork to do the same for retirement. I triggered a family migration. We'll all be in Australia soon enough. -35C or worse? Never again.

What part of the city are you in? (no need for specifics, just curious. PM if you prefer). I was raised in Waverly Heights, and eventually bought a house near the same area.

Welcome to 惟F 馃榾

Thanks for the welcome. I and my family live in Charleswood, west end of the city; grew up in St. Boniface. Yep it can be cold, but then so are many other places in Canada and Europe. My family appears to be migrating west to Calgary-both our kids are in university there, and my brother recently moved there as well. We have a comfy life here, with the left-overs being spent on things like watches...

-35C? I don't know how anyone survives in such cold. Here in Southern Minnesota it rarely goes below a balmy -32C

During my compulsory (at the time - now it is not) military duty I spent a good deal of my 15 months in the very northern part of Sweden. As a Norrlandsjaeger (ranger?) you were expected to fully function in extreme cold for long durations of time. You get used to it after a while. And you are equipped for it. In fond memory are nights spent in bivaq (dug out in snow) - with all clothes and the boots inside and at the bottom of the sleeping bag to dry them out. It could be -35C outside and you were sleeping as a log. The cold makes you burn calories like crazy. We ate tons and all of the time. Some things I would never have considered eating before - suddenly tasted like the best you have ever had.

I finished my tour of military duty as the equivalent of second lieutenant - doing what we call the cadet school. Even if it was compulsary and at the time maybe not what I would have prefered - now many years afterwards I would not have missed for anything.
Regards
JE

Edit: my friday night alcohole induced and nostalgic rant might be excused a little if I enclose pics of UG: s?

I thought the Swedish military used these in cold climates for camping and transport, or have they canceled the Royal mounted Toppola division? 馃榿

You have to be very motivated to design and construct such a beast. I would like to have a look into the designers brain.... or not.
I just want to ask...why? Its a bird, its a plane, its a SAAB with a Toppola! And it is seriously sick.
