I prefer the slightly sturdier version:

Haha yes, somewhat 😀

Well, it all started with me finding a small and a much worse picture on this watch, auctioned out by a small auction house, without any possibility for internet bids, nor any decent pics on the watch. I saw a huge possibility to get a great deal - FINALLY! 😀

I asked some with more knowledge and got an estimated of somewhere 3k+ usd in current condition and lack of info. As I was certain to win, I basically started to calculate how good deal it would be... I think I decided to bid 2.5k usd or something...

So, when the auction house called me and said that he had a pre-hand bid of like 8k usd and asked if I was in, I almost thought he tried to fool me... Afterwords he told me that it sold for - wait for it.... - 16000 usd! I dont know if that include commision or not, but it really does not matter... I think I can say congrats @HissigP anyways 😉

To be a bit less optimistic, I dont really know if that is reasonable at all - at least I did not believe so, so maybe you wont get that much but that is the latest ex I have seen sold so I have no better estimate either....

Thanks for the info.

Many have contacted me today with bids and estimates from 10-30 000USD. But this is not up for sale, at least not for many years, and I cannot part with for this kind of prices.

But its nice to have a value on it insurance wise.

I would take any that I could find at 16000 USD.

The fascinating SAS history and the Gerald Genta connection make these watches extremely desirable in my opinion.

Add that to the scarcity and the fact that some are still within the families of the original owners and hence not for sale, then I am fairly confident that I will not be inundated with offers of watches for sale.

I was the $8K bidder. Timing of the auction killed me so I knew that I would fall short. I think ChicagoFrog said it best, there are no secrets on the Internet. It was a tiny auction house in a small Swedish town with nothing else but garage sale furniture for the other lots but I knew there would be buyers. Hammer was $16,000 but the buyer bid up to $20,000. A big number but I’m still sick about it. I have never seen another one for sale. Limited quantity and tremendous sentimental value to the owners means a long wait before you’ll see another one offered. It’s a true grail for many and in the true sense of the term not a “hey, look what I just bought!!” definition. Even at $20,000 I believe you would have seen a higher sale price in a more traditional, larger auction format.

It’s still great to see these SAS Polarouters turn up especially with the original connection like the OP. It’s so hard to come across any. Many thanks to HissigP for posting. It’s a beauty and yes, a grail. Glad to hear he plans to keep this in the family.

yes, mum, dad, uncle, granddad ... anyone!

Actually, I would prefer one that was specifically owned by a NY-based SAS baggage handler, who won it in 1955 from a pilot during a whiskey-fueled poker game in the back room of a restaurant in Chinatown, and was later inherited and preserved carefully by his son.
