Well seems like there is a happy ending here, on top of the learning (thanks again guys!), the seller will accept a return which is great. His reply I think is likely pretty genuine as he seemed very good to communicate with throughout:
“It’s something I’ve never noticed in 10 years of owning the watch... but looking at old photos it looks like it’s always been there, particularly as I’ve never had it serviced...”
So, the hunt continues 😀 Anyone with an exceptional example willing to part with it for the right price?
Good to hear that you were able to return it.
Now they key is patience. Take your time. Set up alerts on ebay, auctions, and keep an eye on watchrecon. You can do better than option 3.
Yes sounds like the right way to go now.
That said, the seller of option #3 just came back to me after accepting the return to say if I did want to keep it he’d let me have for £1,150.
Does that sound like a good price, or does the dial damage make it a real no no? I don’t know how easy, or worthwhile, it is to track down a replacement dial later down the line (along with a bracelet which it doesn’t come with). And a service which it hasn’t had for 10 years.
A service for this watch will be expensive (hundreds of pounds) as it is a complicated calibre. If I were you, I would walk away from Option #3 and look for something better as it's easy to keep putting money into a watch without a return.
Regards, Chris
That depends entirely on whether you can live with the dial damage and enjoy the watch. You have it in hand and maybe you can wear it a bit to find out.
I know it would annoy me I personally wouldn't take the offer. And don't buy it with the expectation to fix it up and replace the dial later on. That will probably end up being more expensive than getting a good example from the beginning, as @ChrisN says.
The price is low, but generally I buy into the mantra saying it's better to overpay for a great example than underpay for a poor one.
Option 1 and 2 look like they lost some flesh from refurbishing. I like 1 more than 2 because of the nice lapidating/polishing. The original bracelet would be a 1170/653 which is not too easy to get, especially the 653 end links. Regarding the price 3 seems cheap but if you add 450 EUR you are at almost the same level as 1 or 2.
Hands of No. 2 look like replacements to me.
If you need pics of a soft refurbished one I can send you some of mine.
