Hi Charlie - very cool watch.

Thanks for the rundown, really interesting to read your thoughts and analysis. I had bid on it too, but didn't go too far. The thing that attracted me to it was that it looked like a bit of a barn find, with the caked-on dirt and whatnot. I'm also Irish and was interested by the idea of a "delivered to Ireland" Speedmaster (which is of course an assumption).

Do you have any idea of the provenance/who the owner was/why it was in such barn-findy condition? Appreciate that you may not want to be too specific, but any general details as to the watch's backstory would be interesting to hear.

After the cleanup it looks like a good wearable vintage Speedy to me.

IF you end up selling the bracelet and end links you may want to do them separately. 1039 usually has 516 end links and yours are the earlier 16 which are harder to find (and are for a 1506 bracelet for a 105.012-xx)

I prefer the plain hippocampus rather than war-an-peace written casebacks on later versions so will probably keep as-is.

FYI, the correct -69 case-back is also a plain hippocampus pre-moon version.

You did a great thing, you must have learned a lot about these great watches, congratulations. The wealth of knowledge you have gained is worth more than buying a good watch to start with and you must have enjoyed this project, in my opinion a bargain compared to some tat that is available from dealers that should know better.

Hi Conor,
Watch came in a ziploc bag and nothing else. The Auctioneer wasn't too chatty but I got a sense it may have been part of an estate sale.. I mentioned it was a bit unusual to find one in the wilds of Offaly to try prise a bit more info but no joy! Couple of days in and running strong. I haven't run it fully down but certainly holding a charge for 24 hours+
I was doing a bit of research on the 16 endlinks and it seems that the pins may have been original... one was rusted solid which led to pitting on the case and the other was clean but springs had sized. They had a quick-release tab which up to recently I'd only seen on a few Panerai pieces I have so I presumed they weren't original and fire them in the bin Luckily they were in poor shape!
Had a root through the strap drawer and going to spend the morning experimenting!

So I cleaned out the strap drawer and came up with a few different looks..
22mm nato is the correct length @ 26cm - a bit cramped between the lugs but very comfortable.
20mm tan leather.. looks well but I think it's a bit too chunky. Speedy head is a bit too light so would need a thinner strap.
20mm nato..much cleaner fit between the lugs but only 24cm so too short.
I also came across an ebay special I picked to try on the Speedy Broad Arrow gmt.. Black rubber strap looks OK, practical on the deployant but strap sits too proud over the lugs so not a flyer.

Think it's time to head for Amazon to look for a 26+cm 20mm nato!

Anyone used the current Omega nato or Nasa velcros care to pop up a pic or two?
