105.002 lume

Dear Collecting Colleagues and Friends,

I bought this 105.002 a while ago and assumed the hands had been replaced in the past.
However, I recently had a conversation with a close friend who stated that the lume on the hands has the texture of tritium rather than luminova.
Now I'm beginning to doubt whether or not these hands have been replaced.
It's a 105.002, so it could have both alpha and baton hands.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Could you eventually share the movement serial number?

Thank you

Sure, no problem!

19.834.XXX

I have seen 105.002 with alpha hands as well with baton drop in this serial range.

Looks tritium to me.

But the sweep second hand seems to have been repainted (white) in the past.

On the MWO book the only 105.002 with baton hands have a serial number starting from 20.52x.xxx

Cheers

You can use a UV light to determine if it's tritium or luminova.
In general, tritium will either shine for a short time or no shine when the light is turned off after the UV light is turned on. Luminova will retain its shine for a longer period of time when the UV light is turned off after exposure to the UV light.

Yes, I read the book as well, but I am aware of some examples from earlier serials that appear to have original baton hands. They have earlier serial numbers but were delivered at a later date than mine (December 1963).

I tried it with some UV light first, and that is when I became suspicious because it retained some shine for a longer period of time than I expected. However, because luminova has a flat surface, the texture of the hands appears more like tritium.

Tomorrow, I will use UV light to examine the hands. I will keep you all updated! Thank you very much.

There appears to be a clear discrepancy between the intensity of glow in the dial and the hands. How long did excitation of the hands last? if it appeared to not decay than I believe that would suggest luminova. If they decayed after a brief of time that was not at the same rate as the dial hour markers it would suggest the hands were relumed with tritium at a later point in time or replaced with tritium hands that were not original to the dial.

I believe the hands have been relumed or replaced. After a +-half-minute, there was no lume left on the hands.
