Amazing. Same with the women’s gold medal game.

As a Canadian, I'm gutted but congrats to Team USA and kudos to them for paying tribute to Johnny Gaudreau. I'm also happy for Connor Hellebuyck who as a Vezna winner has been dogged by the notion of not stepping up under big pressure. Any such notion can be put to rest. What a game!

I agree, that women's final was amazing but again, the "wrong" team won 😉

Nice from the U.S. perspective to get a couple wins for sure. Canada’s teams were incredible as always. No sport quite like Olympic hockey.

What's also refreshing is to see how other countries stepping up their game as well !

Canada had the better team, US had the better goalie…

Much was said about the distance between venues. How would you describe the overall experience? Were the logistics an issue? Have you bc attended prior Olympics?
The vibe seemed very good on TV.

The essence of hockey: Sacrificing your teeth to win the Gold.
Maybe he can replace those busted teeth with a Gold Grill.

It sucked in a lot of ways. We had to not go to Woman’s biathalon. To go from biathalon to curling was 3 hours. Shuttle, walk 500 yards to catch shuttle B to take you to a train station, with no signs, nothing directing you where to go. Finally get the train to the other station and again, no signs, nothing. Find the third shuttle bus to go to Cortina. At the venue in Cortina there were volunteers everywhere and my first thought was why aren’t you guys out helping at the train station? I’m more than capable of finding my seat in an arena. Everybody on the bus was questioning why not just have a single shuttle between venues and Cortina?
Also had to sell USA vs Germany hockey tickets because it started at 9:15 and the last train to Torino where I was staying left at like 9:30. A lot of this is from buying the tickets early and the schedule not finalized until much later. Lessons learned.
The food was not expensive and the venues were not too commercialized. I dread to see how the US does this in 2034. $400 salads come to mind like the Miami Grand Prix.

The excitement of a single-elimination tournament, for better or for worse. An amazing performance by the goalie, and one mistake in overtime. The previous US gold in 1980 was the most classic example.

But at least it's not decided by scores from judges.

Agree. The single elimination games are over-hyped by the media, fans and players. But they are exciting and it was very entertaining hockey (even without the fighting)

It is very good hockey overall. I only wish the NHL was half this good even part of the time, but when you play so many games in a season, you really can't go all out all the time like they do in these events - well you can but you will be burnt out by the time you get to the near never ending playoffs.

Of course the owners want it the way it is, and sacrifice the quality of hockey for more tickets sold during the regular season and playoffs.

The hockey was a good product with a format built for mass appeal with time in mind. Win-or-go-home + 3x3 OT leads to a lot of excitement you don't get over a long series (or season). In a 7 game NBA series it's always game 7 that's the most fun. In a tennis GS the fifth set is always more exciting than the first set. In baseball the product completely changes for the better in October.

Olympic athletes train their whole lives to get one short moment on the world stage. Figure skaters and gymnasts know this better than most! Every mistake is amplified.

I personally really enjoyed the 3x3 OT.

The play was so good because of the format, so much in the line.

@Archer and I were going at it on another thread and the one thing we both agreed on is that the 3-on-3 carnival hockey OT format has no place in a championship game.

This game had the intensity of a Game 7 of the Finals, and should have been allowed to finish the same way.

Yep - single elimination in the playoffs is fine, but the 3 on 3 was simply not good quality hockey compared to 5 on 5.

It's possible the next Winter Olympics will have a different format. Though I enjoy the pace and open ice 3x3 provides I'd have been happy to watch 2-3 OTs as well.

But post game comments knocking referees or second guessing agreed-upon rules generally feels like bad sportsmanship, meant to diminish the win. That's how Jon Cooper came across to many.

Let's not undercut Canada's own accountability in the loss. Looking at you, Nate MacKinnon.
