Extremely rare 1962 Breitling AOPA 24 hour Navitimer - ref 809 with wide bezel and all black dial powered by a Venus 178 movement. Later known as the ‘Cosmonaute’ based on the same model worn by astronaut Scott Carpenter on May 24, 1962 when he went into space aboard the Aurora 7. The 24 hour dial was produced so space crews would not confuse midday with midnight given the consistent relativeness of space. Was happy to be part of helping a friend and fellow collector acquire this spectacular example recently.
We’re headed away for a few days, trailering in the Rocky Mountains. We will join a group of like minded friends. Time to shelve the Speedmaster reduced, and wear my 50+ year old Caravelle transistorized. It sold for $39.95 to $49.95, depending on the model. This one is Japanese made, and is a good runner, but it gains a bit.
