Got a hike canceled today as it looks like rain. I actually do use the compass setting on the alpanist for hiking although 99% of the time I use it only because it’s there but it can actually assist on the return if you are using unfamiliar trails (or no trails) one issue I find the compass crown doesn’t lock and you can inadvertently move it if you get into a bit of climbing etc. you also need the sun visible to use it so cloudy days can be an issue. Either way always a watch I enjoy and the compass is just a thing certainly not a necessity but I guess I could say that about all watches
