Other than pocket watches he owned, this is a rare mechanical for him. Once they became available, he was pretty much a ‘quartz watch only’ guy, but I’m really glad at this discovery… A sweet little watch to be cherished, no doubt!

·In the mid 1980s, I managed a jewellery store for a national Canadian chain of stores. We carried Rolex. On one occasion, the managing director for Rolex in Canada, was in the store. We chatted about watches. I told him I was a collector of watches. Several weeks later, a package arrived, addressed to me. In it were two virtually NOS Gruen wrist watches that he owned. He had been the president of Gruen in Canada when they folded. He went to Rolex. I found out from the western sales rep that his boss drank scotch. I sent him a 26 of Johnnie Walker Black Label. He was FURIOUS! He wrote me and told me that, had he known I was going to do that, he wouldn’t have given me the Gruens!
