    Back to an old friend. 1965, near as I can tell. I’m guessing, because this one originated from a box of Accutrons in pieces, acquired from a fellow (now deceased), who fancied himself as a watchmaker.The bezel came with one lug bent, and another one cracked. I took the bezel to a goldsmith friend and asked him to gold solder the cracked lug. He turned the job down! I brought it home, got out the asbestos soldering pad, borax, de-natured alcohol, gold solder, and my acetylene torch. Here goes nothing, I said to my self. The trick to soldering something like this is to gradually bring the whole item up just to the melting point of the solder, so the solder will flow, predictably. Voila! Neat solder job. This process anneals the case so the bent lug straightened without cracking. Now to locate and service a movement, find a dial and hands, case back, etc. Crystal, gasket, cell, job done. I like it. A good runner.

    By the way, it must be said that asbestos is not a good choice to use in any application, including hard soldering! A charcoal block would have been a better choice. Don’t do as I did, do what I say!
