Wearing a recent acquisition today in need of a little TLC, a Mido Multifort Super Automatic, circa 1941. The watch uses a Taubert & Fils "waterproof" case that traces its DNA back to an early 1930s Taubert design which featured an octagonal stainless steel case, decagonal screw down back, and a specially treated cork winding stem seal. Iterations of this 1930s "waterproof" case were used by various manufacturers such as IWC, Vacheron & Constantin, Longines, Mido and Gruen through at least the early 1960s. Also attached is a photo of three watches tracing the evolution of the 1930s design: circa 1934 Empire; circa 1941 Mido Multifort Super Automatic; and, circa 1961 Gruen 23 Precision Power Date.
Nice. My jeweller found a few Multiforts in an old box. Maybe I will take a second look. They were small 30 ish mm?
