Partially true. It was a different situation when the American industry asked for the tariffs. Swiss labour was cheaper and the Swiss were shipping knock offs of American designs to the States. Watches were given names much like the better US makes to fool the customer. One of the laws the government brought in was the requirement for a "where made" marking on the watch's movement. The "swiss" mark was often buried in the engraving on the balance cock to get around this. I still watch for oversize blue jewels when looking at late 1800s pocket watches, a sign of a Swiss made knock off.

Kind of sounds like what the Swiss are dealing with now with Chinese watches, except they are straight up copies or forgeries.

Got an amazing deal on a Snoopy ::psy::!...
    ....
Had to compromise a bit, though, since it didn't come with the Co-axial movement...

... instead, it has the illustrious C.M.SHULZ 'tennis ball' movement, a hand-wind beauty...;)

American watch making companies and machinery helped the Swiss produce better watches. The Swiss taught themselves how to produce watches cheaper than the American companies could bring themselves to produce them! Not exactly a ringing endorsement for the Swiss watch of 100 years ago! I am so happy that the American companies never took a page from the Swiss companies, and diluted the product! Tariffs aside, at one time, American watches really were better, to my way of thinking!

Today my 1954 JLC Futurematic after an extended and rather expensive stay with the watchmaker, after it lunched itself because I forgot to take it off before going on a 30 mile bike ride ::facepalm2:::whipped:. All better now :) .

Only suitable that 'his lordship' wears a crown.

Not that lords do that. Not a lord either... My carefully constructed setting is falling apart :( But the tea "Ceylon Pekoe Uva Highlands Highgrown" is worthy of a lord

Nice. Love the asymmetry of that model. It's an "exciting" watch.

Agree, the asymmetry is one of the great things about cal. 1040.
