Yes. We were not issued watches when we entered U.S. Navy pilot training in late 1986…so I went to the NAS Whiting Field Navy Exchange and purchased the Seiko 6309-7049 during primary pilot training…I consider it my first watch as an aviator.
Learning to tell time required an additional 9 months of intensive training for Navy personnel.

From what I remember, the current Sec Nav at the time was John Lehman. I know that he brought back our issued leather G-1 flight jackets…as well as brown shoes. This may have had something to do with money cuts elsewhere…as in the non issuance of watches. I know that I have flown with pilots at Delta who preceded me by several years regarding Navy service and they were issued watches.
