·Today being Pearl Harbor Day, I thought wearing a watch that was found at Lockbourne Airforce Base in 1970s where both the Army and the Navy learned how to bomb in 1940s would be appropriate.
Tony was an Airforce Staff Sargent in charge of the motor pool repairs. One day in 1970s while on duty an officer came to him with a wrecked car. SSgt Tony C. took care of it. In return he got a map case with Capt. Marc A. Mitcher's Blue Jacket, a Navy standard operating procedure manual of sorts. This 1940s edition was stamped with his name on it.
What is more remarkable is the 1937 Longines Weems Annapolis that was in the same map case. Could this be Mitscher's watch? Yes it could be. Who was Mitscher? There are books about how he was one of the great Admirals in the Pacific. And he was as Captain most famously known for being Captain of the USS Hornet CV-8 that sent James Dolittle and the Tokyo Raiders to bomb Japan as payback for Pearl Harbor. Later he would go on to loose many flagships but ultimately he beat Admiral Yamamoto. His most lasting contribution to naval tactics is to change sea battle from battleships to aircraft carrier task forces. Well he and Yamamoto.
This Annapolis watch was used in a WatchTime article launching the new Pioneer line of Longines watches which was all about pioneers of aviation.
