Coffee to start today,

Heard a coffee shop was doing a special roast to help Brian Redman raise money for a fellow racer, John Paul Jr., who has Huntington’s disease. It’s pretty good too, being from an actual coffee shop rather than a gimmick like most themed coffees. I do recommend it! (they ship nationally)

Well I have been guilty of that in the past! Not sure of the reference here though. Is it the bourbon mention I made? It's a bourbon barrel reserve version of their 14 yr old single malt.
Apologies, My bad, i didn’t know they make bourbon. I will have to find bottle 😉 (I thought you put up a wrong photo)

Ok. So most of us bourbon fans NEVER got to taste the mythical Pappy's.

Honestly...what's the verdict?

Btw..
Of all the loftier whiskey's , this one strikes a chord with me...
I am pretty bad with detail description (I am a INT/FP type), but intuitively it is kind of similar to a Blanton original sweetness wise with more bite owing to slightly higher alcohol content and longer finish with slightly more variety of flavour.

I.e. I think Blanton is really great vs. pappy for the price.

No problem, easy mistake to make by the way I worded my post. It's a typical 14 yr old but finished in new Kentucky casks. I typically lean towards peaty malts but I do like this one.

A near neighbour has made good use of WFH with his first home brewing. Now lockdown is relaxing I was able to assist with some tasting notes last night. Woodfordes Wherry. A Rich amber ale packed with flavour / a bit lively at times - impressive first attempt. By the end of the session it was not just lockdown which was a bit relaxed…

Pappy is... or should I say was, a heavily wheated bourbon, this means it was sweeter and more mellow. It was produced at the now closed Stitzel - Wellar distillery. I actually have 4 bottles of the last stuff made in that distillery. The Jefferson Select 17.

Now Pappy is made to spec and has been for years. I think the older ones are way to oaked, the younger ones that you can get now are stronger.

For the record, those Jefferson selects I purchased for 60 dollars, and are worth over 5k now. It is amazing, and the best American whisky I have ever had. Jefferson released alot of other whiskies, and even some called select, none of those are from Stitzel Weller.

That is quite a find re the Jefferson Select 17 - a friend of mine who owns a liquor store and has been into bourbon for years told me that he couldn’t sell that Jefferson’s stuff when nobody knew it was the Stitzel juice, but now as you say it is a highly coveted bottle.

I’ve had Pappy 10, 12 and 15 before and really enjoyed them but I also really like wheated bourbons. If you can’t find Pappy then try to find Weller 107 somewhere (msrp is 55-60 and lots of liquor stores now mark it up to 100-150 but you can find it for msrp if you look hard - I snagged a bottle two days ago at retail). The hype around Weller’s is that it is the same mashbill as Pappy and when Buffalo Trace deems a barrel doesn’t meet the Pappy flavor profile then it becomes Weller’s. So it should give you a good sense of what Pappy tastes like and if you really like it then try to enter a few lotteries to snag a bottle at retail. If you like wheated bourbons you can also try Larcency and Larceny Barrel Proof, and Wilderness Trail has a wheated bourbon but it’s on the younger side.

Blanton’s is an excellent bottle of bourbon, also produced by Buffalo Trace, but not wheated so it’s not a good comp to Pappy.

Copper dog tonight. Came with this cool little accessory, also called a "copper dog" which I had to Google. 😀

I knew what it was and purchased as many bottles as I could get my hands on.

Man my place does not mark up 107 and it’s like 30 bucks lol( limit 1 though.)

I 100% agree with your recommendations!

Well, I will not be drinking this tonight.

I had owned it for 29 years, until it went into Bonham's whisky sale, today.

No regrets, I may add.

Steve.

Last night we enjoyed a tasty California merlot. This one is velvety smooth (decanted an hour).

I had my Universal Geneve FS Italian Railroad watch on my wrist. There are few vintage watches with the same bang for buck.

A good Merlot—try their Three Palms vineyard Merlot—one of the best available.
