I was introduced to Pinotage on a trip to Cape Town about 1 1/2 years ago--and loved it. It's not a grape as well known as it deserves to be. South Africa was a great olfactory revelation--between the wines, the flowers on the Cape and in Kirstenbosch, and the mud pits and dung in Kruger, I don't think my nose ever had such a party in my entire life.

Haven’t tried this one. I have bought several of the cask strength A’bunadh. Have you tried them both?

Yup, and had great A'bunadh and not so great.. mostly amazing though. The 16 is alot more mellow, and less hot as the ABV is obviously, much lower.

Actually, the espresso martini isn't as alcoholic as a lot of others - it's a mix of 1/3 ordinary red label Smirnoff (37.5% ABV), 1/3 Mr Black's coffee liqueur (25% ABV) and 1/3 espresso coffee. When I make a Vesper martini, it's 3 measures of Tanqueray 10 (47.3%), 1 measure of Belvedere vodka (40%) and 1/2 a measure of Lillet Blanc (17%). Now that's bloody lethal. As Mr Bond said, "I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold, and very well-made."

Yes I have. I prefer this to the A’bunadh. The higher alcohol content in the cask strength is noticeable. I find I have to put a couple of drops of water in the A’bunadh. This 16 year old is really smooth and mild. I might have to find a second bottle. 😀

Mrs Wiv is frequent flyer in the Espresso Martini making world.I find the lethality comes not from the booze content or quality, more the caffine which , given how easy they are to drink, has lead on more than one occasion to folks actually bouncing off walls in the early hours. 😁

Problem with that is, your Vesper martini tastes strong. An espresso martini tastes sugary and sweet, and goes down quickly.... one can drink a few of those before realizing what it's done to them!

n.b. I prefer my martinis extra dry, Beefeater if available. Here in the US it's less alcoholic than in other markets (40 vs 47%) but it's essentially just a very cold cup of gin with an olive in it.... Two is my limit in an average-length evening (~4 hours), and I have a pretty high tolerance if I do say so myself.
