Yamazaki 12. Dinner by my wife and origami made by my mother in law.

Had a dram at Shaw's just before the holidays. I think this and the Yamazaki Mizuno 18 I tasted in November are the whiskey equivalent of blue balls. Savor that bottle!

One of my past band mates relocated to Vancouver Island a few years ago, bought a vineyard and distillery, and the awards have been racking up ever since. Apologies to those outside British Columbia, but this award-winning and quite exceptional ‘rye’ is not yet distributed abroad. Kevin uses barley, spelt, emmer, khorosan, and einkorn to create this lovely whiskey by deVine Spirits. I’m really happy for him; a lovely fellow who deserves all the accolades. Seek this out, if possible. His Glen Saanich single malt is likewise killer.

Today, it's an Aperol Negroni. Quite a bit sweeter than the traditional Campari version, but since I'm out of that bitter spirit, I thought I'd experiment. Besides, it's helping numb the pain of losing out on a smokin' local deal for an FOIS.

I love Negroni but never had an Aperol version. Have to try it soon.

Last night, we had some Modelo at our local Mex hangout . I had the dark and my better half had the light with lime.

Celebrating 37 years of common law union....it's a thing here in Quebec. Also, marriage is the no. 1 cause for divorce!

Picked up a Jameson 18 cask strength, it’s exceptional. Higher abv gives so much more flavor. Straight to my top shelf it goes. I have more expensive and rare bottlings of bourbon and Scotch, but my fav will always be Irish whiskey. Irish only on top.

Crown Royal Northern Harvest. It’s hockey night, after all.
Whiskey of the year 3 years ago!

Needless to say it caused some arguments. Great for the price was never debated!

There are too many whiskey snobs I think. I understand wanting something rare, or a serious age statement bottling, but there are so many great pours that are readily available and inexpensive. I could drink Buffalo Trace all day, my preferred age statement scotches are all mid teen age. Beer guys are the same way.

True...

But staking it vs a dark arts or similar and it pales. Whisky Advocate rankings are intentionally controversial sometimes and that was one. It’s a great 55ish bottle for 35-40msrp. Which is why it got it. It was not the best whisky that year by far. They alluded to this in the rankings. It lacks the depth and balance of most 80 plus bottles. It is stellar for the price no doubt... but not much better then Buffalo Trace.

You’ve had enough tastes to understand the price point in a blind test by now I would think. At a price point BT and Bullet are stellar, and I’m not sure that rye is much more amazing.

@Foo2rama great points, really.

Ya know, I still don’t know if I can appreciate some of the higher end bottles I have. I understand balance more, I enjoy finding the nuances of flavors, the aromas, etc. I just find 15 yr plus bourbon tends to taste like 2x4s, even high end and expensive ones. Older Scotch tends to become too rounded and I can’t pick up on tastes, it’s not thin or like a blend, but it doesn’t have the flavor that stands out. I guess I’m still at that point.

Beer kinda the same, I’ll take a wheater Hefe over all these fancy craft brews.

I still buy the “good stuff” and kill the bottle, but I get as much satisfaction out of others I think.

Notice I’m not equating age to value or how good it is 😉 some of my best bottles are Kilchomen’s first bottelings at minimum age for scotch. Things can be over ages and well put rounded. Balance, complexity, and pleasantness are all averaged against price. I drink the heck out of bullet rye, Bombay sapphire and eldorado 12 rum. Sure I enjoy the more expensive stuff but I don’t always want to be hitting a 80-200 plus bottle when I can enjoy the more daily stuff. That doesn’t mean the big stuff is over priced, just a different segment.

I’m not a snob... JD is actually not bad lol. I’m just saying the rye while good may not be the best at the price point, and is not the best overall by far.

I don't care who says it's good - all rye is gross! And yes I'm Canadian...
