Would you sell 2 connies to acquire an IWC cal.89? - My dilemma

if you do that I like that gold plated one on the bracelet so send me a message 馃榾

Good that you like it! The guy who is selling the IWC already has a buyer from Canada lined up who is interested in both connies (a connie collector I believe).

To get the IWC I would have to honour that, sorry!馃榿

Good day all!

I was considering trading 2 connies (yes 2!) for an IWC cal. 89, let me enlighten you further!
I do not have the money to buy the IWC outright so I would have to release the connies as a clean trade.

When I saw the IWC it really spoke to me as beautiful in its simplicity, timelessness, class and quality.
Although I am new to vintage IWC I have researched this one and believe the dial to be original.

I do not consider myself a collector rather a vintage watch enthusiast and would like 1 heirloom piece and would like to wear and enjoy!! Although I need to be a little investment wise too about this potential trade!
Interesting! Your target Cal 89 looks original, and it is of course a great watch, that anyone would like to own at some time. But turn it round - if you are seriously prepared to turn in 2 nice Connies to acquire a proper heirloom with timeless simplicity, class, quality, and all that, then you should seriously research an Ingenieur. It might mean you need to save a little cash for a while, but you would never feel regret afterwards. I think you might with the 89.

Thanks for your opinion. Yes there is the risk of regret. I don't know anything about vintage IWC and probably would not go any further in to IWC even if I don't get this 89. It was not on my radar until I saw this one and it is beautiful isn't it? And to have a dress watch like this in 18K馃榾
I have a few days further to think about then I need to make my decision.
Keeping all this in mind I will stick to the mantra of "no regrets" whichever decision is made.

If it helps, time is on your side. The 89 in the OP is a good one, but it's not unmissable, and not unrepeatable. Cal 89 had a long innings, and most of them came with the sort of elegance in case and dial that I think you are looking for. Good luck!

Good point. Those lugs are not that common especially on such a nice example of a cal 89. I would like to show you pictures of the movement condition and case back but dont know if it is okay to do so as now its about IWC. But if the forums dont mind I would like to show you

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this forum.

I have made my decision: I'm not willing to part with my Constellations! I haven't even had enough time to enjoy then properly. I may still buy the IWC then not buy anymore watches for a few years馃榿

I would not, unless that cal. 89 is inside a Mark XI 馃榿

Nevertheless, I鈥檇 lean more towards the trade. You already have an Omega, and it might serve you and your collection better if you diversify. I would like to see some cash on top of the IWC, though.

I thought cash on top of the trade would be good but the gold cap connie needs a service and the seller needs to make something out of the trade.

I calculated that the financial loss on the Connie's would be $150 on what I paid for them.

How come you can鈥檛 make something out of the trade? 馃槈 The point is moot, anyway, since you鈥檝e decided to keep the connies.

I paid $1538 for the connie's and the IWC is selling for $1300. That's a deficit of $238. But 1 of the Connie's needs servicing (that I would have had to invest in ) and as a courtesy he is willing to service the seamaster I have and a rado automatic (which I'm going to sell) for only $100 which is half price.

He will send the 2 Connie's to a buyer in Canada and pays for shipping cost from South Africa where I am.

All in all with the saving on servicing my watches so cheaply I will have broken even with the trade.

Oh no not a moot point. May still change my mind yet馃榿 some more photos of the IWC

That IWC is gorgeous and much rarer in South Africa than the Connies, which are good watches but much easier to find here.

NKB - if you鈥檙e in Cape Town, did you find the IWC at a vintage jeweler in the CBD? I was admiring a similar gold IWC in the window of a shop on Long Street yesterday. Was wondering if it might be the same watch.

Hey-nice to hear from a fellow South African!
I am in Durban. And great to get a South African perspective on availability as you mentioned

It's not the same watch I dont think. The seller is not in Cape Town. What was the price of the one you saw?

Asking R40,000, which is too much, though the seller has historically been negotiable on price.

Is the IWC a 37mm jumbo? If so, then I think the trade may be fair.

In comparison $1300 for the cal. 89 is an attractive price.

R40000 is $2800 for the benefit of others! Way too much!

This one is R18000 ($1300) 馃憤

Diameter is 36.5mm (according to seller) excluding crown. Is that jumbo then?

I was leaning toward YES but the 'PINKIE' legend killed my mojo. NO.

No the pinkie gives it some character IMO.
Like who was Pinkie? And as a heirloom pinkie could be for anyone it's not a particular name and its affectionate 馃榾

Yes, but I just noticed the caseback engraving. That can be repaired obviously. Without that engraving, these jumbo 18k cal 89 pieces are hard to find for less than $2k these days, in good condition.
