Would YOU do it? Buying the head of the Speedy now, buying the bracelet later...

Hi, folks:

I am back again with another question; hopefully your advice will help push me in the right direction

So, here's the deal:

I've found a rather trusted seller who is parting with a 145.022-78, but it comes on a NATO.

It may seem like a trivial question, yet I find myself wondering if I should just wait for as good an example as this one with the bracelet or just source the 1171 and 633 end links later (which do cost a pretty penny.)

What would you do in this situation?

Here is the watch:

Bands are there all the time. If the price is ok for you, buy the watch you like and wear the NATO.

It's all a matter of the numbers.
So true.

This is going for $4,650, and a bracelet will cost maybe $500 if I can talk a guy down. So is it worth around $5200? I'd say "yes" given the crap I've been seeing elsewhere. I just worry if it would look odd or if folks would call it out of the bracelet if it is not "truly" original to the watch.

Lol! But try finding as good of an example that doesn't need immediate service... I haven't been able to at least!

Yep all about the price but there’s certainly nothing wrong with a vintage Speedy on a nice leather strap or a Forstner bracelet (original or re-issue) 👍
Strap recommendation “The Prague” @acollectedman

Not to forget Uncle Seiko's bracelets.

I just worry if it would look odd or if folks would call it out of the bracelet if it is not "truly" original to the watch.

You should be more worried about people calling you out for paying too much for that watch.

You need to take your time. Sure if you want one tomorrow then you haven't much choice I guess.

I am all open to hearing whom you would recommend I check out for a piece this good at a lower cost! Who doesn't wish to save a buck?

The watch's "head" IS the watch to me.

Maybe I'm not the typical watch purchaser when it comes to that.

But, I always figure, I can buy the perfect bracelet or strap for it later.

A follow up question to you:

What would you pay for this watch?

Way too much for a -78 IMO with unattractive hands (missing lume) and a polished case.

I thought the lume may have just been faint. And those edges look sharp to me, but, then again, I do have novice eyes.

Look again, you can see lines on the dial right through the missing lume in the hour hand. And no, the edges are definitely not sharp. Get some better photos and look closely. Worth maybe $3500 at the most IMO.

Take a breather and relax. Keep an eye on the sales section on this site and something will pop up. 👍

How about this one?

Looks good just watch the numbers. 👍

Edit: looks polished as well but most dealer offerings probably are.
